LONDON (AP) - A painting of Monet's Waterlilies that has not been seen in
public for more than 75 years sold for just over $20 million on Monday,
Sotheby's auction house said.
The picture, which Claude Monet painted in 1908 as part of his famous
Waterlilies series, went to an anonymous bidder for $20. 2 million, including
the buyer's premium, at Sotheby's in central London.
The Impressionist masterpiece was last shown in public in 1925.
The grandfather of Monday's anonymous seller had bought it in 1940 and it
remained in the family's private collection in rural France ever since.
The record for a Monet was set in 1998 when his "Waterlily Pond and Path by
Water," sold for $29.7 million at Sotheby's.
