I loved that show. It was so funny when he told Edith he was a female
impersonator, and Edith said "well that's smart, who better to
impersonate a female other than a female?" AITF was sooooo un-PC, they
said things that can't be said now, like Archie calling Beverly a 'fag',
even though most people knew Archie was a characature of a stupid bigot.
Those were the days.

I don't remember that episode but I googled google groups and found:
Here's the Washington Post obituary from 1984:
SAN FRANCISCO -- Don McLean, 44, a female impersonator who played a
"drag queen" who got mouth-to-mouth resuscitation from Archie Bunker
on television's "All in the Family" program, died here Feb. 11. The
cause of death was not reported.
A theater director and producer and a critic for San Francisco's gay
newspapers, he was best known under the stage name Lori Shannon, long
the star of the Finnochio Club.
========
The San Francisco Chronicle archives only go back to 1995 but I found one article
that said "the late Lori Shannon" and another article on the closing of Finnochio's
in 1999 that mentioned him/her.
From the SF Chronicle:
Another popular act (at San Francisco's Finocchio's Club) was Don McLean, otherwise known
as Lori Shannon, the 6- foot-5 comic who became nationally known after playing Archie
Bunker's drag queen friend on ``All in the Family.''
Appearing in a wig, heavy mascara and a tight dress, McLean would tickle the tourists with
such one-liners as, ``Welcome to Boy's Town -- I'm Father Flanagan.''
Thanks for the info. I guess I googled wrong.
