I saw the special too. I remember Bruce saying something a long time ago
about how he didn't want to end up like Elvis, surrounded by a bunch of
adoring yes-men. It was really funny to see everyone in his band sucking
up to him so much. The slightest little joking remark he made was greeted
by loud hoots of laughter from his band members. I think they all have a
sort of Mr. Burns-Smithers relationship with him; by that I mean, I think
they're all a little in love with him, in awe of him, and aware of the
fact that they owe him a great deal and wouldn't want to piss him off. It
was sort of weird to watch the "Blood Brothers" portion of the special and
see Bruce surrounded by yes-men every bit as fawning as Elvis'.
Bruce and Miami Steve's touchy-feely version of Two Hearts didn't strike
me as odd, though. They've always done the song that way. They are
childhood friends who don't have a problem showing affection toward each
other.
Not much help at all answering your question, huh? I've always thought
that a few of the band-members seemed gay, but have no evidence, just
really good instinct.

I worked for Bruce and the E Street band a few times. (Pre-Patti and
Post-Patti, I might add). Clarence is *not* gay. He's married to a
white woman and they have kids. Although, I know that doesn't mean
anything to this crew, but he isn't gay. Now, Miami Steve, I wouldn't
know. As far as I know they are all hetero. (MS's replacement, Nils
Lofgren, lives in the Washington, DC area and I think he's married.)

Having also seen him sans chapeau, and getting makeup, I can assure you
that whatever you saw was a comb-over. He occasionally appears in
videos w/o the hat, but combs those thin whisps over his dome.
