Is former New York Met Rusty Staub gay?

I have always heard the rumor that former New York Met Rusty Staub is
gay, he's a gourmet chef who owns his own restaurant, he's 65 years
old and there's no mention on Wikipedia of him currently having or
ever having a wife.

I also wonder why some of these very old ex-baseball players don't
just come out already? Wouldn't the gay community consider them
pioneers if they did? What risk is there at this point?
