I'm looking for the instruction sheet for a toy or model of Kaneda's bike
from the anime or manga AKIRA. Actually, I'm looking for the type and
placement of decals on this motorcycle, on the anime version, and the
manga version.

I've surfed around and found plenty of pix on the www and have watched
and paused my video plenty of times, but I still can't pick out all the
stickers. Could I have suggestions on printed sources, like in which
issue of AKIRA (Epic comics) to look (I don't have any issues...), or is
there any way I can coax an emailed jpeg of scanned material from someone?

Thanks,
ET

The only clear ones clear on my limited pictures of the bike (anime type) are
the USAF insignia near the windshield and the "CITIZEN" ones near the handle
bars. I have a few of the comics and for the most part Kaneda's bike is
mostly unmarked. (At least in the comics I have.)

I picked up a looong out of print copy of the B-CLUB SPECIAL "AKIRA
MECHANIX2019" (sic). Within are pictures of models, original
paintings and production 2-view drawings and even photos of 1:1 scale
models from the movie! One of the pages is entitled "STICKER
COLLECTION FOR POWER BIKE: KANEDA MODEL" . They appear to be to
scale, are in color, and even has a diagram for placement on a left
and right view of the motorcycle.

There are 11 labels:

1. "BIG 1"
2. a yellow smiley face
3. "Arai HELMET" Arai is in script, Helmet is in smaller letters
4. "X"
5. "CITIZEN" As in the watch
6. United states aircraft insignia.
7. "Cannon" as in the camera company
8. A BMW logo, with green instead of blue
9. yellow triangle with three blue triangles in each point, with a
red disk inscribed within.
10. Three characters; probably some kinda beer; can't translate.
11. "SHOEI"

I don't have my new flatbed scanner running yet, so anyone interested
should e-mail me and when I get around to scanning, I can send it to
your e-mail. I picked up a 1/8 vinyl recast of the power bike, sans
decals. I plan to run this scan scaled correctly through a color
laser printer onto white or clear decal film. Should work.

I also have the 1/35 model toy power bike; I think it had a sticker
sheet. I may scan that too.

I have just checked the anime. There are basically two clear shots of
the decals, When Tetsuo is on the bike, at the very beginning, you
can see the left side which shows the following decals:

Canon
Citizen
USAF alike
BMW
Shoei
A chinese decal
a triangular decal I could not identify

When Kaneda leaves to catch the clowns you can see the right side
where you find:

Arai
A rectangular decal I cannot identify

the same decals can be observed (especially the chinese one) when
Kaneda plays chicken with the head of the clowns. I strongly recommend
you to get a copy of the video (is it avalilable at the blockbuster's
video?) for the precise locations, especially on the right side where
it is very crowded.

Best regards

I've watched my video to destruction. Paused just one too many times.
You know if we all were using Beta tapes, the tape would've probably
lasted longer. I never owned a Beta VCR and don't work with
professional video machines, but I heard that Beta heads don't rub
against the tapes they play.

Uhh, anyway, the pictures I have so far for this project
have been posted to:

http://table.jps.net/~derict/bike/index.html

Most troublesome are the Japanese characters. What are they? If anyone
has a copy of "Akira Mechanix 2019" and is willing to part with it,
or knows where to find one (even in a distressed condition) please contact
me!

I answered without reading the full message. I have a PAL machine and
the PAUSE works great (It's an old Panasonic, 1992 I guess), actually
is the best among my friends' VCRs.

Just checked it. It's a J48, NTSC native and PAL (2 types)
alternative. In NTSC the PAUSE is even better. If you get one give it
a try. It has "only" 42 cable channels, but mechanically it is an
excellent machine. The original remote control allowed for a
frame-by-frame playing mode, but my children broke it and now I must
use a play-pause-play mode (grrr.....).

I'll try to get a hint on the japanese characters. Actually I only
have a chinese-english dictionary, but if they are old characters,
there shouldn't be any problem. I am going to the video now...

(...)

I've been rechecking the anime. On the right side then, you have a
smiley, the Arai decal and the recatngular one in which you can read :

BIG
=1=
===

(kind of graphic representation)

As for the chinese one (left side) I could identify the following:

there are three characters, vertically distributed. The first one is
the most difficult to identify. In chinese it resembles a LONG
character (LONG is the pinyin romanization) with a flat accent on the
O whic may indicate "imperial" or "dragon" (an imperial attribute).
Then you have a TIAN character (a square with a plus sign inside it)
with in chinese may indicate "the land". The last one is the SHAN
character, wich in chinese means mountain. The meaning of each
character may be similar in japanese, BUT if they are combined
phonetically... this may be of no help.

Just checked you reference! the big picture is in contradiction with what
I've seen in the anime... In "bike4.jpg" in addition to the logos I've seen
in the anime and the ones published separately in that page can recognize a
Yamaha logo and a Honda logo. The Japanese logo reads the same, but has
additional characters on the sides... the everlast logo is not seen in the
anime. Also, in the anime no decals are seen behind the driver.

In any case it seems that you should select one basic reference (the anime?
the manga? "bike4.jpg"?) and stick to it. I personally would select the
anime, as the bike is shown from many points so you can have a 99% confidence
on the decals existence and position...

Best regards,

Andrea

p.d.: do you have a model of this bike?
