Also, sperm can degenerate if not ejaculted for a long period of time and
I don't think it would be healthy to have that happening.

I can only give you second-hand info, but I used to know a fellow with
prostate problems, and his doctor specifically recommended that he
masturbate often (to ejaculation.) I guess an orgasm a day keeps the
doctor away, eh?

No. He didn't obey God's instructions to impregnate his late brother's wife.
This was interpreted as forbidding masturbation earlier in this century
but if you read the Bible you will find NOTHING forbidding masturbation.

Yes, it does get _interpreted_ that way, by Christians who can find no
other Biblical passage with which to condemn a universal, pleasurable,
and harmless practice. But read the story, and find that Onan was not
masturbating as much as he was practicing coitus interruptus, and that
God's resultant displeasure was from Onan's refusal to impregnate the
widow of his (Onan's) brother.
Bizarre, eh? -----Rob

Good spin, I hadn't thought of it that way. However, God didn't tell
Onan to go and impregnate his sister-in-law, his father Judah did. The
passage's meaning is fuzzy.
However, if you mention "practicing Onanism" in mixed company you'll
either get blank stares or polite giggles. It's now a rather obscure
euphemism for masturbation, whether or not God intended it to be.
(No, I didn't have this memorized, I got it from the www bible gateway,
which is a pretty cool resource. http://www.calvin.edu/cgi-bin/bible)
--------------
RSV Bible, Genesis 38:1 38:10:
It happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers, and
turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. There Judah saw
the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; he married her
and went in and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.
Again she conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. Yet
again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. She was in Chezib
when she bore him.
And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar. But
Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD
slew him. Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and
perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for
your brother.
But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to
his brother's wife he spilled the semen on the ground, lest he should give
offspring to his brother. And what he did was displeasing in the sight of
the LORD, and he slew him also.
--------------
So is "what he did" referring to spilling himself on the ground, or sex
with his sister-in-law? Since he didn't actually conceive (ack! the
withdrawal thread again!) God is either punishing masturbation or sex.
Or at least that's my take. I'm no bible scholar; opposing views are welcome.

I dunno, flying ranks pretty high up there too...especially when you're doing

Interesting. So if he had jacked off eight times and THEN impregnated his
late brother's wife, he'd be okay? It's funny how you don't see Christian
men rushing to marry their late brothers' wives nowadays. But then, Chris-
tians eat pork, too. :-)
Thanks for the tip.

That IS (the masturbation ban) an INTERESTING misinterpretation. When I
read it, it was abundantly clear to me that he was disobeying both "God's
Command" and local custom, and being very "rude" to his new "wife," who
expected him to fullfill his obligation and duty to carry on the line, as
was her "right" under local custom. Being "barren" was a dishonor for
HER, and he was supposed to "fix" that situation "caused" by her husband's
death.
And people actually come up with this as meaning you shouldn't masturbate?
Though I had heard that the Bible was being referenced as the source
of the supposed "proscription," I had no idea the reference was a story
that so obviously has to do with a lot different issue. Guess that's
what happens when you don't pay attention...

Of course, Christians will tell you that they're not interpreting the Bible
at all, just following it. When the issue of things being "lost in the trans-
lation" comes up, they usually duck it. I wonder whether an English Bible
and a Spanish Bible forbid the same things. Given how hard it is to accurately
translate even a simple document, I doubt it.
