nameless got burned that way once) Your obligations in handling a pic
that was sent you unsolicited are certainly limited, but it would
probably be kindest if you pulled the file and/or shared it some other
way.
Why the non-lesbian ones?
As you say, your gender probably increases your take. I suspect that
having your picture on your site does so as well. The promise I got came
after the reader/anthologist in question had persuaded me to send her a
picture of myself.

I've also had guys send me pictures of their wives and claim that they
of them. They then say that they are interested in exploring FF and
would I be interested in chatting, etc. In once case the guy sent me
vacation pics to include some of his wife and daughter in modest one
piece swimming attire. Cracked me up.
The most interesting ones I received came from a person who had sent me
her pic in a traditional fully dressed backyard pose. Subsequently I met
her for online chatting and we did some role playing where she was the

that I could use in case I decided to blackmail her. She's married and

Mailing a picture to someone strikes me as about as rational (and
irrational) as posting your sex stories; and most of the reasons for
doing the latter can be used (with a little tweaking) for the former.

Once, and it was a long time ago, I had someone mail me a nude photo
and say it was her. This was before digital cameras (at least consumer
grade), and the photo looked pretty professional. I wrote back and
told her (if it was a her) that I didn't believe the correspondent was
the woman in the photo. We exchanged a few more email messages, I think,
but I don't remember the details.
To me it was and is pretty weird. I don't expect to get photos from
readers and I don't think readers should send them without asking
first.
When I post my stories, I put them in a public place where interested
people can read them. When someone emails me a picture it is personal,
not public, communication and presumes an interest on my part that I
have not expressed: seeing my readership. The photo being nude or not
is a bit incidental.
Perhaps that photo was an effort to repay me for my efforts in writing,
with the only sexual currency the reader had to offer, but while I like
feed back, I don't want payment.

Besides, in all likelyhood, the person is probably ripping the pics from some
ng and saying it is them. Heck, look at MSN or Yahoo. Well over 25% of all
the profiles for women have a pic that you will recognize if you are someone
who looks at binary ng's for pics. lol.

As a way of communicating, yes. But nude pictures without some
invitation to correspond in that fashion sometimes suggest an offer of
more than just pictures.
Not always, though. But I never can be sure that isn't the idea of
doing it, to show off and get some sort of nice response back.
Exhibitionists, though, that I can see. It is simply fun to show
off. I get that part, but are all those fan pics really for that,
rather than just a way of trying to make the conversation more
intimate?

The photo being of someone else, I try not to think too hard about
that one. It happens.
When I was in the service, a friend decided to show me the nice
photo he had of his girlfriend back home. It was a lovely, glossy
color nude. Very well done.
I was polite, and said she looked really nice, asked a bit about her
and how they met, that sort of thing. I didn't have any nice pictures
like that of my girlfriends -- I could have, but didn't. The
instant-pic polaroids of the era were barely good enough to show you
who you were looking at. The only reason I shared those -- and some
other guys did as well -- was because in basic you rarely opened mail
in private, and I didn't expect that in a letter from home (another
guy had the same issue, a nudie pic; mine was fortunately a rear shot,
no face, the sort of thing which is too vague to really reveal
anything, not frontal).

Most often I've got pics after an invitation to be shown them. The
reader tells me about the picture, asks if I want to see it? Usually
I say yes, and for me nude or not nude doesn't matter.

I don't think it is usually payment, just another form of praise. A
desire to show trust, to flirt, to want to make more contact with you.
But the implied offer in a nude pic is hard to ignore. Especially
if you don't plan on following such up (or maybe worse if you are
tempted to do so). It does make some sense, a lot of online dating
involves pic exchanges, especially chat stuff.

Yep, definitely these things should not be sent unsolicited. I never really
got the point. Years ago when I was hanging out with a mailing list group,
sometimes pictures would make the rounds. I decided I was generally much
kinder mentally about how people looked. And a couple of the guys where the
conversation had turned (umm) more intimate - well, lets just say I'd rather
they not have sent them in the end. If you want to 'turn me on' - a great
sound recording, with a sexy voice, is more likely to do it.
And the funniest (and scariest) was the guy with cross-dressing tendencies. He
used to hang out in the chatrooms, playing a girl to see if he could 'pass'.
Using (is anyone surprised) pictures of his wife when sending out pics. Yikes.
In the end, if someone is sending me a picture - make it either a really nice
shot that you like (porn), or one you've taken on your last vacation (one that
shows the location, not your travelling companions). I'm a sucker for great
landscapes, seascapes, or even garden shots.

In 1972 - (Let's see, was that AD or BC ... ?) when I first arrived in Japan
I
was sent to Korea for 60 days of temporary duty. With me I took a photograph
I had brought from home - one of the few . . . it was an old Black and White
photo of the woods behind my Grandmother's house at dawn on a winter's
morning after a fresh snowfall. While there I showed it to a few Koreans
while
drinking one night . . . the next morning I didn't have the picture and
thought I
had lost it. I cried for the loss because it used to bring me such peace
looking
at it when I felt down.
A week later my picture was returned to me - along with a 22" x 38"
painting.
A young woman who'd become smitten with me had stolen the picture to have
a friend make the painting. The following link is 'not' really like that

I've talked here before of my love for the scene of a small wooded copse
at dawn after the first snowfall of the season. It's something I find
soothing,
peaceful and quite lovely. One of my favorite things is to take a cup of
coffee
outside just before dawn and watch the woods as the sun rises, sipping my
coffee while I simply stand or sit and take it all in. There is a real
beauty in
the simplicity of it all.
I had that painting for nine years. It was with me in ten of the twelve
countries
I have visited and always had it's place on the wall of whatever residence I
had. Until a drunk friend got angry with me and destroyed it to hurt me -
Sorry to say it, but I damn near killed him over a 'thing'. Another flash of
my
sometimes 'instant' temper -
I only bring it up because of your words - and the sudden longing I have to
be able to see it once again. I don't even have the photograph any longer -
it disappeared with a couple of photo albums and some other things during
a military transfer.
Think I'll check with a couple of galleries and see what I can find.

I've got some nice sunset pictures over Tampa Bay, taken from Rocky Point by
a co-worker (he took pictures while our new building was under construction)
which I placed on an internal website.
(I've applied for an ASSTR webpage so I'll probably throw in a "Sunset
Gallery" with it...)
Additionally I'll look through some of my other digitized photos to see
what I've got. I was into photography very heavily 35 years ago and I
scanned in a lot of my stuff, I just need to go digging through it.
As for winter scenes- there were scenes that I've always missed having
a camera for, when I was down along River Road in Bucks County- not of
snow, but of the trees just barely iced, lit from behind. Just now,
remembering what that looked like, makes me miss it. I also loved the
first buds of spring in the trees with the gentle pastel green...

And this is the general reaction from all of the non-Alaskans to whom I've
mentioned or horrible lack of winter -- "it's only early December...." But
having NO snow by early December would be very similar to most places having
four feet of snow in the middle of summer. This is a Big Deal. Normally by
Halloween we're skiing and the outdoor rinks have been iced over and are open
for skating. By Thankgsiving, we're usually able to skate on the lakes.
Sledding is one of the primary weekend activities from late October on. This
year? I haven't even unpacked my winter coat. There are days when I've been
warm in a long-sleeved T-shirt.
Don't get me wrong, I like 'warm' weather -- but in June, July, August. Not in
October, November, December.

First question, your days are "How long " right now? Second question; Along
January/February - don't you have "days" (weeks?) where about all you get
is a 'sunrise' or 'sunset' (depending on how you look at it)? Three or four
hours of perpetual sunrise/sunset can allow plenty of time to 'find' just
the
right angle for that perfect shot. <g>

As for the snow, I understand how a 'dry' early season can spell a mild and
less satisfying winter. Many people in the contingent 48 states might not
realize that the average winter temperature in Alaska is "Warmer" than that
for North Dakota, Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan - not to
mention Maine. <g>

The biggest problem w/ Florida is that winter falls on the afternoon
of the third wednesday of January. It ran a little late this year
though, it took up the afternoon of the third friday instead.
Likewise, there's the old joke:
Q: Do Canadians have weekend barbecues during the summer like
people in the US?
A: It depends.
Q: It depends? On what?
A: Whether summer falls on a week-end.
We've got some poor souls down here likely to have to travel (travail?)
up to Toronto (I'm told it's supposed to be pronounced "Trawna") during
the winter. Going from Tampa to Canada in the winter is not for the
faint of heart- or thin of jacket. Somehow I'm not sure that the
purchase of adequate cold-weather gear is reimbursable...

This can work out OK if the group is just friendly. I've done that.
But if it gets past that, the criteria of judgement tends to get more
picky.
Pictures alone don't show what a person is like. While I don't
think that my appreciation is hurt by pics which aren't quite sex star
material, it isn't going to turn me on in that way. Part of that is
my feeling that sexy pics are nice for fantasies, while relationships
are about reality. For our online communications, the words are our
main reality.
Another thing about pictures: what do you say? I don't want to say
more than thanks, maybe a you look nice, something polite. If I do
anything else, it feels like I'm suggesting something.
Any comment on appearance can be taken negatively as well. It can
be hard to explain what you mean well enough to make it clearly a
compliment.

OK, I could see that picture trick. Maybe he could do an honest
pic, but though I've been lucky enough to be mistaken for a woman from
certain angles, not all guys can -- and it isn't easy to look that
good in a simple picture anyway.
Digicams now make it darned easy to share private pics. The image
quality isn't so hot. Not so many using them who learned real
photography, or even read some guides on taking good pictures. So I
figure that there are going to be a lot more less than classy pics
running around in chats and stuff.
Plus the really good stuff ripped off the net. Seems common enough
to use some other person's pic as yours. I'd rather send nothing at
all than a fake.

I don't mind the pics of people, but don't think that a nude,
especially a hardcore pic, is usually as nice -- in terms of making
contact -- as a nice well-dressed portrait shot.
Everyone has different ideas about what is sexy of course. I happen
to think that nice everday happy looking is better than sexy clothes
and pushy nudity, for getting acquainted. It is what I'd like to see
if we were meeting in person for the first time as friends.
I'm not against nudity and sex of course. I like the pictures of
those things as well, but it is for different reasons.

Oh, I dunno. I head up to Vancouver usually once every Winter for work, and
it isn't too bad on the left coast up in Canada. That Pacific stream really
keeps it warm up there, and wet. They barely get more snow than I get here
near Dallas.

Close. If I were spelling it phonetically, I think I'd add a short a between
the t and the r - tarawna. Actually, perhaps more of an e - terawna. I
generally avoid that type of pronouciation myself.

goes down about 3:45 (so we've got about 5 hours, 50 minutes of 'day'). By the
end of the month (in this part of the state) we'll be at 10:15 - 3:35
(approximately, iirc), but you're right, the sun never does get very far above
the horizon. I find that I need sunglasses more often in the winter than we do
in the summer -- primarily because (a) the sun is always shining right in your
eyes, never truly 'overhead' and (b) normally there's a lot more brightness
from the reflections off of the snow (not an issue this year <g>)

Yes and no. Unless it's cloudy (and when it's cloudy it tends to be noticeably
warmer, so cloudy is sometimes a good thing), the time that the sun is in the
sky is pretty bright -- not really "set" or "rise". What we find most often is
that it's dark then it's not in a matter of minutes. And vice versa come
afternoon. My students adjust remarkably to spending a good portion of the
morning with it being dark outside, then dark again when school lets out.

Prints showings.

Depends on what part of this massive state you're looking at. There's really
no way to give an accurate "average" temperature for 'Alaska.' But what you
say certainly holds true for South Central and South East Alaska. Fortunately,
we're not as warm as those places are in the summer either (although Interior
Alaska reaches the 90's on a regular basis, those of us down here in the
'civilized' part of the state rarely see temperatures above 75).
It's not the lack of cold that's the problem this year (althought that IS an
issue). I like our cold temperatures, and I don't really start complaining
about them until they reach weeks in a row of colder than -10 (and then I only
complain because -10 is when we can't let the kids out for recess anymore and
they start to go insane). But the lack of snow combined with the lack of cold
poses quite a few potential problems.
We rely on snow for a lot of things here. Snow provides ground insulation.
What sometimes happens when we have these odd warmish winters is that there
will suddenly be a dramatic freeze, and since there isn't a snow base, we end
up with serious frozen pipes and dying trees. We can't dig deep enough to
protect the pipes from the ground freeze because of the permafrost--and there's
not enough mulch in the state to protect our forests from a sudden and
snow-less ground freeze.
Also, winter (ie snow and cold weather) sports are a Big industry in this part
of the state. No snow means no skiing. We have three downhill slopes within
the city limits and the big one just south of here. They all employ a huge
number of seasonal employees. I don't know that there's ever been a year that
Hilltop hasn't been open by now. And then there are all of the retail shops
who rely on winter gear for their sales. I suspect that the bigger places
(REI, Sports Authority, etc) can handle a little bit of the downturn, but the
local places are hurting.
And then there's the issue of the summer effects. Without a few really good
freezes, we're bound to be overrun by mosquitoes. We don't have a lot of
different types of summer bug-pests (fex -- we don't have the chiggers that
y'all down south have to deal with), but our mosquitoes are -- even in the best
of years -- legendary for their size. Without a good freeze, we won't get a
good kill-off, and this summer could be an exceedingly itchy one!

I used to have one really great shot of the green lights, but it went the way
of a crashed and died computer. I'm pretty sure I've sent it to someone here,
but I'll be darned if I can remember to whom. There are a lot of great
websites out there with wonderful Lights pictures, and for a while I had a
wonderful book about the lights, but I sent it on to someone in less "blessed"
location. They're amazing to see first hand. Always different, always
surprising, always inspirational (yes, there are two "Northern Lights" hopper
stories sitting there, waiting to be written -- one a rather vanilla romantic
interlude between a married couple, the other more Alaskan/mystical.

I was told once (when I was threatened to be sent up there last winter)
that mispronouncing it as "toe-ron-toe" would have me deported. Violently.
Admittedly, I didn't like digging my cars out of 33" of it about 7
years ago. Nowadays I wouldn't mind being snowed in now that I can
actually tele-commute; The problem with that idea is that the kids
would not be SNOWED OUT and stranded at the school. *darn*
The main advantage I see to colder climes is that it's a lot cheaper
to keep yourself warm than it is to keep yourself cool- and there's
nothing to help you in Florida when you go out-doors in mid-summer
(which seems to last about 8 months).
And you still don't get use of your lawn down here like you would
up north- while winter may deny you the use of your lawn for a few
months, down here the fire ants deny the territory from you year
round (and if you don't have fire ants it's because you've been
dumping a lot of poison down, so you still can't use it). The *nice*
thing is you get use of a barbecue grill pretty much year round,
though. I'm not sure if that makes up for it, though.
If I had to move back north, though, I'll *have* to get a Jenn-Aire.

Two things conspire against a phot being good for this; First, film
doesn't have the dynamic range of the human eyeball, especially in
terms of how it's presented (slides/prints/etc) and Second, the color
sensitivity of the human eye varies.
Though one thing that irks me- I see some really awesome sunsets and
even plenty of rainbows (Florida is great for this) but it takes a lot
to get my wife to step outside to take a look- and she'd get more out
of it color-wise than I would! (It doesn't hurt that she still has
20-15 vision, though she now needs reading glasses due to the loss of
focussing power of the lens. Just like me. These gradient glasses
are pretty weird to get used to.)
(Did you know that women have, on average, much better color vision
than men? Of course, men are better in low-light and low contrast
environments because of the other side of the "feature". This feature
almost makes sense in gender-linked evolutionary models, though the
evolution of non-sentient males has a little further to go...)

I post sex stories because I like the craft of writing, because I'm
interested in sex-and-human-nature (and all that), and because I want
to share what I've written. It seems to me that mailing your picture
to someone has nothing whatever to do with any of that. It implies a
personal relationship. (Of course, if you want to go all Urfe on me
and say that naturally every reader-writer relationship is intimate,
you can, but that doesn't mean I have to picture all my readers in
their underwear, does it? Oh, please say it doesn't.)
So what the heck are you talking about, most of the reasons for
posting stories can be used for mailing pictures?
Incidentally, I've never had a reader mail me a photo, naked or
clothed, with or without asking. And I'm a woman. (Please note that
I'm not complaining, just remarking. Both you and Katie seemed to find
it natural that women should get more pictures than men, and people
just don't seem to send em to me, is all.)

Yes, down here in Texas the fire ants are a pain in the butt, too. However,
since the yards on new houses are so small, anyways, it hardly matters!
The major difference between Central FL (where my parents now live) and TX (and
I live near Dallas) is that FL gets rain, and lots of it. TX doesn't. Our
heat is dry generally.
As for snow, having lived in MD near DC for years, I don't miss it any. In NY
people knew how to drive in it. But if you happen to live in those dangerous
areas where the temperature fluctuates between freezing and not, ice is the
biggest problem. And I hate ice.

I've noticed the trend- houses the size of zeppelin hangers-
with side yards at the legal minimum (you'd be surprised how
detailed zoning can be). Fine if you live indoors.
Seriously, though, house w/ more than, say, 3000 sqft really
need a riding vacuum cleaner- like a John Deere Shag Zamboni.

I spent a week near Dallas for a class back in summer of '98
during the big heat wave. Yes, it was pretty brutal but at
least I didn't take a bath in my own sweat.
I used to "commute" ("Jack, we need you in Tulsa this week,
get a cash advance and book a flight") between Houston (where
I was living) and Tulsa; Houston is like Tampa: Low Humidity
is anything UNDER 95%, while Tulsa is (if anything) drier than
Dallas, where HIGH humidity is anything over 15% (or so it
seems).
Of course I also spent some time doing the same trick between
Houston and MinnieNoplace, supporting benchmarking efforts (I
wrote panelized I/O routines and array processor microcode).

I don't like ice either. The biggest difference is that there
are different *types* of snow- some are deep and *wet* so
the shoveling is harder given the weight- which is what comes
further south.
I've done too much on glaze (a/k/a "black ice"). It's no
fun at all. I also learned it's most dangerous when the
temps are closer to freezing. Below 10degF the pressure on the
ice from tires isn't enough to liquify it and make a fluid
bearing (which is how ice skates work).
Florida is *tolerable* but only *just*. I've got a little list
of places I *won't* live; Florida has yet to join their august
company.

I don't know really what the key is. Maybe it is something in
presentation in the stories, or in the way you interact with readers?
Being flirty should tend to get more presonal responses, I'd think.

I almost ended up in a position to tele-commute a couple of years ago. It was
tempting, but not tempting enough to make me switch jobs (and careers to some
extent). Of course, I always thought I'd consider doing phone sex calls from
home if things ever got tough. I'm not so sure how that works, and I wonder if
I'd ever get out of bed? I'm guessing it's just not as appealing as it sounds.
I've chatted with people who do it out of offices set up for this, and I think
that's what turned me off.

Could be now that hydro prices are going up. I'm not sure if natural gas
heating is cheaper than electricity-run air-conditioning. I don't pay for
either with my living accomodations (although I'm sure I could find out).

In an apt. I don't have the use of a BBQ at all (well, there are some ones in
the common area, but that's too far away unless you're going to eat at the
rather crappy picnic tables near them). My parents always made sure that the
BBQ was close to the back door - and my father loved going out in the snow to
do steak.
