Hi Folks,

I have recently found a story list, which was posted in May, 1992, to
alt.sex
Most of the writers have gone long ago, some of them I've never heard
from,
while Elf Sternberg still is active...

Can anyone say something about the listed stories?

The list is starting in part 3 and ending in part 4 of the alt.sex.FAQ
file posted May 4, 1992 I presume that the cited email adresses are
not valide nowadays.

Appendix 2. by Edward L. Stauff

-- An Index of USENET Erotica --

This is an attempt at a reasonably complete list of erotic stories
that have appeared on the newsgroups alt.sex and rec.arts.erotica. I
would
like to maintain this index as a service to the Net, so if you have
any
suggestions as to format, content, etc., please let me know. Here are
some
explanatory notes about this index:

1. *** I AM NOT AN ARCHIVE SITE!!! *** Requests for stories will be
ignored.
I repost stories to alt.sex as the mood hits me, and sometimes in
response
to requests. For a variety of reasons, I cannot serve as an
archive site
for stories. Sorry.

2. Stories are listed in alphabetical order by title, ignoring
leading "a",
"an", or "the". I decided that listing every type of sexual act
in each
story would be tacky, and insulting to many of the better stories.
I have,
however, indicated major sexual orientations (hetero, homo, bi),
whether a
story involves violence or coercion, and whether the story
contains any
serious emotional interaction between the characters.

3. "Author unknown" means that I have no idea who wrote it; the story
came
to me without a by-line. If you know who wrote it, please tell
me so I
can give the author credit.
"Anonymous", on the other hand, means that the author has chosen
to remain
anonymous.

4. "Archive-Name:" refers to the rec.arts.erotica archive name.
"(none)"
indicates that the story was posted to r.a.e. before archive names
were
used. If the "Archive-Name" field is missing, it means that story
was
never posted to r.a.e.

5. Since my own personal tastes do not include S&M/B&D or gay sex,
these
categories are not well represented. There are probably enough of
those
stories floating around alt.sex.motss and alt.sex.bondage to
warrant
indexes of their own. I'll leave that to someone else.

6. This index does not list Elf Sternberg's Journal Entries
individually.
Elf periodically posts an index of the Journal Entries; watch for
it in
a newsgroup near you.

7. The critical remarks are, ultimately, my own opinion. Except as
stated in
(4) above, I try to limit such remarks to the quality of the
writing, not
the sexual content.

8. Page counts, when given, are based on printing 4.25" lines of 10
point
Times Roman, 42 lines per page. Your mileage may vary.

9. Any corrections, especially on the names of the authors, would be
appreciated. Authors: if you don't like what I've written about
your
story, send me the changes you'd like me to make.

10. This Index is copyright (c) 1991 by Edward L. Stauff. The author
grants
permission to make copies for personal, non-profit use only. All
other
rights are reserved.

11. *** I AM NOT AN ARCHIVE SITE!!! *** Requests for stories will be
ignored.

Yes. Why, do you want copies of the ones I've got? Oh, I just noticed
I've got this index dated 12 December 1991 if you're interested.

I did most of my collecting w/in a year of when I first got USENET
access back in mid-1991. The noise level rose a LOT a few years later
and I stopped checking the alt.sex.* heirarchy. Still, I'll post what I
have if people are interested. I have most of this in the form of Word
.doc files, some dating from Word for Mac 5.0, but I can convert them to
something newer or back to text as appropriate. It just occurred to me
that the reason the sizes I've got do not seem to match probably have to
do with Word-bloat. <sigh>

Maybe I should put this stuff in an on-line archive myself. Hm, hadn't
thought of it.

Didn't bother with this one. IIRC, it wasn't very imaginative, or maybe
it was too short, unlike "Food Chain", which was great.

Got this. I wouldn't say it was "unauthorized", as S.B.Douglass said AT
THE TIME that she(?) didn't have any idea of how to kill the thing.
Also, I can see how it might SURVIVE "Food Chain"! Disturbing stuff,
fer shur.

I wasn't around then, but some of it rings bells. Apart from Elf Steinberg, two
other authors were known very well and posted many stories over a long period -
Friar Dave and J.Boswell.

Also 'Blackmailing The Queen' (author forgotten) was a dead-set classic, and
immensely popular. Maybe it still is.

Friar Dave is back and at storiesonline. Some, at least, of Boswell's
are in ASSTR, I think.

What you could do is get a Collection site. "Howard Shubs' Collection
of Early ASS* Fiction" or something like that.

Websites are free.

Er, is that something on ASSTR, or something I create myself?

Soitenly they are. Already started creating one, by adding a directory
to my existing site. There's nothing in it yet, though.

Something you create yourself. ASSTR offers users the opportunity
to create their own website, hosted on it, for free.

Of course, but you can always make a site on ASSTR. That has the
advantage of being easily searched from that site, located on its
index, and so on.

Assuming, of course, that reposting permission exists. As observed

I think that'd make the most sense if any of this had been written by
me. I've noticed in the past that ASSTR seems to be organized by
author, but I've written none of this. The closest I've gotten hasn't
yet been finished.

Wow. I was around then and remember some of these. Electronic copies
of some of these are long gone, and in the last office excavation
I think I tossed my last print copies, formatted with LaTeX and
printed 2-up double-sided in booklet form. (Psnup is great.)

Ed Stauff was, I think, the first moderator for rae.

> >"Adsorbing Passion", S. B. Douglass; 26,550 bytes.

Never read these stories, though I knew of them. To tell the truth,
S. B. Douglass didn't float my boat, though there was nothing
wrong with his writing.

I vaguely recall S. B. Douglass being male, but that could easily
be a mistake--I might be confusing her/him with Fred MacMurray's
character on My Three Sons.

S. B. also did the Jesse Helms contest, an attempt to write erotic
fiction without any words that Helms could object to.

A classic, and I still regard it well. I might still have this one
someplace; I used it as the text when I was teaching myself FrameMaker.
What's nicest about it is that all three of the main characters actually
are transformed during the course of this story. The ending is appropriate.

What he said. Ho-hum. The other two Tom & Tiffany stories mentioned were
the only ones I ever knew of, though of course Phil Phantom had a Tiffany
series.

Rather well done, though in hindsight I'm not sure the supernormal effects
were perfectly integrated into the story. I liked Deb Atwood's writing
enough to go look up Churche House.

Oh, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth about this. A rape story
with few redeeming features. Spawned at least two sequels by other authors,
including Cindy's Revenge and a revenge on the revenge (I think), as well
as a parody or two that involved nothing happening to the main character
at all.

This might still be floating around in some places.

I'm not sure I could finish reading this, but I had an aversion to
elves and such at the time.

> >"Farmer's Daughter I". Archive-Name: farmers-stepd-1.

This may be the one where the opening paragraph tells you the daughter
is called Minx. I seem to recall that's the extent of the symbolism; I
don't think I managed to finish reading chapter 1.

> >"Freewheeling Barbara Toys with Boys"

Also much fuss; I recall when the evidence came to light that the
text had been a book (a Bee-Line book perhaps?).

> >"Halloween with Shauna", Ghostwheel; 22,609 bytes, 8 pages.

There were three Shauna stories, all mentioned here.

I seem to recall three stories by James Charles Lynn that shared
characters, but again, perhaps there were only two.

Common on the web.

I quite enjoyed David Weingart's stories, this one and Post Midterm Party
Night.

> >"Riding the Little Red-head", author unknown; 14,837 bytes.

Modern-day setting, nice voice. This one was in the booklet I recently
tossed.

> >"Singapore Girl", author unknown; 86,526 bytes.

Friar Dave; this version may not include the last chapter, which rather
changes the tone of the whole thing. I recall there was a period of at
least a year between my reading the second last chapter (believing it
to be the last) and the last.

> >"A Story for You", Saltgirl; 15,829 bytes, 6 pages. Archive-Name:

Saltgirl was a poster on alt.sex.bondage, I think, though maybe in alt.sex;
she dated richh for a while, and her name was taken from the Morton Salt

> >"Tim and Lisa". Archive-Name: tim-and-lisa.

Ah, this one. This one was the kick in the pants that got me to write
"Unwrap Party." It had a smattering of typos I just had to correct for
my personal version and then some dialogue I thought was stilted and then,
well, I thought I was being unfair to the author so I stopped all of that
and wrote my own story. I remember an earnest discussion of the Kama
Sutra and some dialogue I would call treacly. Perhaps I'm being unfair;
I certainly wouldn't have fussed with it if I hadn't liked it.

> >"Young NaCl's Story", author unknown; 13,795 bytes. Archive-Name:

You could do a collection site.

But the rule for that is having permission for all the stories
posted in the collection. For a lot of the older stuff, that
permission is hard to get, unless the story poster put it into the
story itself. That is one reason I "waste space" in my stories
providing redistribution and disclaimer info, so that should I
disappear, reposters and collectors can follow my rules and be legal.

When I read posts like yours that bring back memories of an earlier
age in the ASS* community, I rather wish I'd been there.

It must have been an exciting time. There wasn't the codification,
there weren't the readers' expectations, and everyone was, in a sense,
a pioneer: creating new forms of fiction from the fragments of other
fiction. A bit of what they'd read in the likes of John Cleland, Anais
Nin and Pauline Reage, a bit of what they'd read in Playboy, Penthouse
and Forum, a bit of this, a bit of that, and the liberation of being
able to indulge in fantasies of the most extreme kind.

At that time, there were no huge story sites, there was no ASSTR and
there was only Elf Sternberg. It was a different world altogether. A
frontier town, no doubt, where liquor was the hard currency and a
stranger coming into town would rustle up a few steers and then head
off into the sunset.

It's good that works of literary magnificence have been saved for
posterity from these days and it is something to be truly grateful
for. Somewhere in the universe, we can find and read Deb Atwood's
"Chaos in My Mind", Steve Jensen's "Kidcest", Elf Sternberg's "A Night
on Thundera" and The TimeTraveller's "Road Games".

I like to think that whenever I disappear from ASSD and ASSM (and
typically it will be unannounced) that several years, maybe even
decades or centuries later, someone will be able to retrieve my
"Emma", "creamfields" or "Naked Compromise" and maybe then, when maybe
I'll just be worm-food in a decaying graveyard, someone somewhere will
wonder who or what "Bradley Stoke" might have been in just the same
way as I wonder who on earth were Magus, Saltgirl, Tom Fazio and Steve
Jensen.

Memory is fallible.

Many of these were reposted recently, as in the last four or five years.

Yes, and on alt.sex.wizards for a time as I recall.

I am reasonably certain that I have Farmer's Daughter complete, or at
least through as many chapters as I ever knew about. I can't remember
whether that's a Mr. Wade story or not, and it's currently buried deep
in a large collection of zipped text files. If there's real interest,
I'll be glad to look for it over the weekend. I enjoyed it also.

Have fun,
Rajah Dodger (yes, *that* one)

Yes, it was written by Mr Wade and there were 14 chapters that were put
out. Is somebody actually looking for this? Can't access previous posts.

Not so much looking for it, as observing they didn't have it. There was a
long thread about stories that were current in 1991 or so.

Some of those stories later appeared on CD, sold for money. Hell was raised
amongst the regulars, as you might imagine.
