Appendix B: List of plush catalogs & misc resources.
Appendix C: List of plush specialty stores & toy stores with lots o plush.
Appendix D: List of plush manufacturers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I. What is a "plushie"?

"Plushie" is the term we use here to refer to what are also referred
to as "plush", "stuffed animals", or "stuffed toys". A teddy bear is
the most common type of these, but plushies are made in the forms of
many different types of animals. Plushies range in size from small
enough to rest on the palm of your hand, to six feet long or even
larger!

II. What is a "fursuit"?

This is a full-body costume that makes the wearer look like a
favorite animal or "furry" character. Costumes like this are
commonly seen being worn by staff members at amusement parks
dressing up as popular cartoon characters. They're also seen at
sporting events where the team has a mascot in a costume, such as
the San Diego Chicken. Since a person in a fursuit looks (and
feels) a lot like a "living plushie", such costumes are
understandably popular with some of the plushophiles here. Several
of the regulars make their own costumes. There are pictures of a few
of these on the FTP site (see question VIII).

III. What is a "furry"?

A "furry" is a character that has aspects of both animals and humans.
Cartoon characters (such as Bugs Bunny) are a common example. But
it is a broad category, and furry characters can be much more human,
or much more like an animal. (They aren't always drawn in cartoony
styles, either.) There is a thriving "fandom" made up of people who
like to collect and create stories, pictures, and other things with
furries in them. The term "furry" is also used as a name for the
fans who make up furry fandom. Many plushophiles also fall into this
category, for obvious reasons. For more information on furries and
furry fandom, consult the newsgroup alt.fan.furry, or point your web
browser to http://web.syr.edu/~pjkappes/furry/index.html .

IV. What kinds of subjects are discussed on alt.sex.plushies?

Many people assume that the group is just for talking about sex,
sexual techniques, and ways to modify plushies to use them for sex.
While these subjects certainly all come up, they are far from the
only things that are discussed here. Some other topics that arise
are what kinds of plushies people have, what they look like, where to
buy them, how to make fursuits and other kinds of costumes, what kind
of furry conventions are coming up, and just plain conversation
between friends. Alt.sex.plushies is a small, friendly group, and
nobody minds if a discussion drifts a bit away from the subject of
plushies now and then. Pictures of plushies or fursuits are
occasionally posted to the group, and these are welcome also. About
the only thing that's unwelcome are the totally off-topic posts and
advertisements that show up periodically as a consequence of being in
the alt.sex hierarchy. If you see one of these posts and wish to
complain, please don't followup to the newsgroup about it. Contact
the author of the article directly through email, or the postmaster
at their site, or both.

V. Do people think of plushies as "sex toys", or as "partners"?

As with most things in life, there are people that fall on both sides
of this issue, and every point of the spectrum in between. While
most plushophiles probably feel at least some degree of affection for
their plushies, the extent of it and the ways they express it depend,
as ever, on the individual, and will vary from one person to the next.
Giving plushies names is quite common, as is cuddling with them while
sleeping.

VI. Just what exactly do people do with plushies, anyway?

A couple of the most common acts are to rub against the surface of
the plushie until acheiving orgasm (some use a condom for this, some
do not), or modifying the plushie to have a hole to thrust into.
This can be as simple as a hole cut in one of the seams, or some kind
of elaborate insert can be constructed.

In addition to these common acts, there are many other things that
people do with their plushies. Some of them are: masturbating while
hugging a plushie, rubbing a plushie against a sex partner's body,
making love while wearing a fursuit, "sandwiching" a partner's body
between yours and a large plushie (or sandwiching the plushie), and
frolicing in a big pile of small plushies after burying one partner
in it. There are also some plushies out there that have dildos or the
equivalent attached to them. The potential ways to use plushies are
really listed solely by the imagination.

VII. Am I welcome here if I like plushies but don't have sex with them?

Certainly! Many of the posters here collect plushies for their
appearance, because they love animals, or various other non-sexual
reasons. There's plenty of things plush collectors can and do
discuss here, whether they are into sexual uses for plushies or not.
Please feel free to join such discussions or start new ones, and just
skip over any other topics that don't interest you. You'll find that
the majority of discussions here are actually not sexual, only a
minority of them are.

VIII. Where is the a.s.p. FTP site?

The FTP server is at pegasus.astro.utoronto.ca in the directory
pub/plushies. There are three sub-directories there. One contains
an archive of past a.s.p. posts, another contains pictures of
plushies and fursuits (in .gif and .jpg files), and the third is a
miscellaneous directory (which isn't used for much currently).

IX. How do I join the plushie mailing list?

A mailing list has been set up for discussion of plushophilia and
related topics, to create a more comfortable, personable environment
than is generally found on Usenet newsgroups. All you have to do
to join is send in a request via email. Here are the instructions,
as announced by the list administrator.

The list is currently 'closed' in that you must be 'approved' before
being able to post to the list. All that is needed for 'approval' is
your subscription request. The subscription address is:

majo...@phocat.com

In the body of the message, type: subscribe plushie

As soon as I get the request, I will approve you and add you to the list.
You'll receive a helpful info email, telling what's considered on-topic
and how to post to the list or get more help.

X. What other plushie/fursuit/furry related resources are on the net?

The resources specifically related to plushies are the newsgroup
alt.sex.plushies, and the FTP site mentioned above,
pegasus.astro.utoronto.ca in pub/plushies. For those interested in
fursuits and costuming, there is a mailing list dedicated to that
topic. It's for costumers ONLY, ask someone on a.s.p. if you have
a serious interest.

For more on furries, there are the newsgroup alt.fan.furry,
alt.fan.furry.muck and alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.furry. Web
sites of interest are http://web.syr.edu/~pjkappes/furry/index.html
and http://www.furry.com .

There are several mailing lists related to plush. The Cybear's
Marketplace is dedicated to buying, selling and trading of teddy
bears and other plush. Email majo...@bga.com with a message
containing the line "subscribe cybears" to join. For general
discussion of plush, the Fuzzy Friends list can be joined by
emailing majo...@bridge.net with "subscribe fuzzy-friends".

Also, see appendix A for a list of plush related WWW sites.

XI. How can I clean a plushie without damaging it?

The following was contributed by an a.s.p. regular:

Cleaning info: Was told by a lady who ones the local plush store (only
one I know of) that regular windex works fine. Spray lightly, rub
with a clean dry towel and let dry thoroughly. Don't handle the plush
until it is dry or the windex will strip the oils from your skin and
they will end up back on the plush. Also there are a few cleaners
designed for cleaning them. Bubble Gund is one and I've seen a
product called Teddy Bear Bath sold at Toys R Us. The former I have
tried and it works well though it's a bit expensive. The main thing
is to keep the stuffing and the fur as dry as possible. Some plush are
supposed to be washing machine safe but I'd only do that as a last
resort since it would give the plush quite a beating around. If I did
try this I'd likely use a mild cleaner like Woolite.

Another regular reported good results after taking a very old teddy
bear, opening it along the seams, removing all the stuffing, and
washing the "skin" in the washing machine. Afterwards he replaced
all of the stuffing and sewed it back up again. Note that if you
need replacement stuffing for an old animal, or want to put extra
stuffing in to make a plushie firmer, materials such as polyfill
are sold for this purpose at arts and crafts stores.

XII. Where can I get the latest version of this FAQ?

This FAQ will be posted automatically once every 7 days to
alt.sex.plushies, and once every month to alt.sex. It is also
available from the plushie ftp site. (See question VIII)

On the World Wide Web it can be viewed at:

Appendix D: List of plush manufacturers.

The following companies manufacture and/or distribute plushies. Most
of them only sell to retailers and not to individuals. But generally
if you are looking for a product, most manufacturers will be happy to
answer questions about where to find the nearest retailer in your
area that carries their line. There's also a short listing of makers
of fake fur at the end. This can be useful for making your own plushies,
costumes, or various other things - covering furniture, using it as a
carpet, wrapping someone up in it, etc. etc. Fake fur can usually be
obtained at most fabric stores. If they don't have the kind you
want, ask and see if they can order it for you.
