Body Painting Index (March update)

This started out as a survey of magazines which had featured pictorials
involving either bondage or body painting. I took the latter half and
expanded it to include books, posters, and various video items. I'm still
trying to put together a mailing list, so if you would like your name added,
drop me a line at the address below.

Some of the responses I've gotten have suggested modifying this list
into a combination FAQ/mailing list. If anybody out there has any painting
experiences they're willing to pass on, drop me a line. Other sections on
photography tips and brands of paints might be a good idea, as well.
I would like to add a section dealing with "exotic dance clubs" that
have featured painted dancers, but have had little luck finding any in my
area. Admittedly, the prep time involved would make this a rarity, but you
never know. If any of you have had any experiences in this department, the
rest of us would like to know!

National Lampoon, December 1984. Cover shot of a model in a painted suit.

Rolling Stone, May 23, 1985. One of the pictures accompanying an article
on the underground club scene had a picture of a topless woman
painted in a zebra pattern.

Playboy, November 1985. The "Women of Mensa" pictorial featured two shots of
a woman made up as a cat.

Playboy, July 1986. Article on the Pirelli Calendar. Two calendars ('84 and
'86) featured painting.

American Photographer, March 1987. pp 61-67 feature shots of Veruschka
painted to blend into the background. An entire book of such photos of her
by photographer Holger Truelzsch was published that year.

Playboy, September 1987. The 007 pictorial of Maryam D'Abo featured a two
page picture of her painted gold in honor of "Goldfinger".

Playboy, January 1988. "Maxine Legroom." Not _exactly_ body-painting, but
interesting nonetheless. Heavy body make-up, wigs (upper _and_ lower), and
contacts.

Elle MacPherson 1993 calendar. The two December shots are nude shots of
her painted gold. A video detailing the making of this calendar aired
in Australia and is available there on tape (PAL format). Negotiations
are underway for a North American NTSC release through PolyGram.

Celebrity Skin #32 (publ. March 1, 1994). Supermodels edition, small shot
of Rachel Williams painted gold.

Penthouse, May 1994. "The Three Graces." Three women in heavy body makeup.

Penthouse (German), July 1994. "Haut-Malerei." Reprint of "Searching
for Bob Fischer" photos, along with one or two shots that weren't in the

Arena, July/August 1994. Naomi Campbell topless, painted gold in a four-page

Flex, September 1994. Nine-page layout featuring three bodybuilders (one
man, two women) made up as robotic aliens.

Casting (French), September 1994 (No. 16). Two items: Two-page, full-body
layout of model Nathalie painted gold in tribute to "Goldfinger". Also,
quarter-page B&W bust shot of model Emma in silver body paint (except face.)

New Rave, September 1994. Centerfold model in tiger stripes.

Dick (Japanese), October 1994. Two-page article w/photos on a body
painting show at the London Colloge of Fashion.

20 Ans (French), October 1994 (No. 98). Full-page, full-body nude shot of
woman covered in tiny silver sequins.

Takarajima (Japanese), November 2 1994. Two page frontal shot of a
silver woman.

Esquire, Nov. 1994. The final shot in their Varga Girl retrospective
is of a model in a painted-on swimsuit. This is the first installment of
a new monthly "pinup," featuring famous models painted to resemble old
Vargas paintings.

Photo (French), Nov. 1994. A series of photos by the same man who did
the Naomi Campbell Arena layout.

Esquire, Dec. 1994. Vendela painted into a white silk dress.

Pure, December 1994. The centerfold model covres herself in white paint with
a roller.

Imagi-Movies, Winter 1994. Cover and interior shots of moel in Veruschka-esque
lightning bolt design by Michele Burke, make up artist for the Coppola Dracula
movie. On a side note, she mentions in an interview that the original plans
for the Brides called for the use of body paints to blend them into their
surroundings. During a test shot, unfortunately, Coppola and some other
bigwigs decided that the look wasn't sexy enough (..."all the wen just wanted
to see the flesh -- the paint was in the way.") Thanks a _lot_, Mr. Big Shot
Director...

Esquire, January 1995. Model in silver stockings and elbow-length gloves.

Esquire, February 1995. Model painted into pink stockings.

Esquire, March 1995. Model painted into blue, 40's-style beach pants.

Foto (Spanish), April 1995. "Cuerpos pintados."

Interestingly, all of the "painted" layouts in Penthouse were done by
photographer Earl Miller (and most of them featured Janine
Lindemulder).

Also, many issues of Hustler, Genesis, and Gallery from the 80's feature
body painting photos in those small sections near the beginning of
the magazine (the name escapes me at the moment).

Parliament News published a magazine called "Carnal" that included body
painting and bondage, as well as other fetishes. Volume 1, #1
was in late 1985. Anybody know what happened to it after that?

Body Art (quarterly) has many issues that feature body painting. Individual
issues cost around $18 and are available in the U.S. at Tower
Records outlets (bagged, so you can't browse), as well as through:

Miscellaneous:

Album cover of a record by an all-girl group named Isis (ca. 1974) featured
them painted silver by Jon Stevens, the photographer of the 2/73
issue of Gallery. It can be purchased from Golden Oldies Promotions
at (513) 561-8657 if you can't find it used locally.

Album cover for a group named Rain featured a nude woman with a "lightning"
paint job (black, with bright bolt of lightning).

The Royal Haverford Circus has an act called "Living Statues," featuring
two men and a woman in bronze paint.

Fantasy Fest. "A costume party in Key West where 70,000 people descend upon
this town of 35,000. While nudity is not completely overlooked by
police, there are many costumes that consist mostly, if not entirely,
of body paint, temporary tattoos, and the like. It is held on the
last Saturday of October, as well as the preceding week (or more)."
Videos of the event are available.

Jon Stevens, the photographer of the "silver" pictorials in the 2/73 issue
of Gallery and the Isis album cover, is now running a place called
"The Silver People Gallery" in NYC on East 89th. No one I know has
ever gotten a return call from the place. Can anybody who lives in
the NY area check this out?

MetaMorf, an IBM morphing software package, features a nude model painted as
a doberman on its cover.

The CD single cover for Jesse Jayme's "Body Heat" features a gold,
bikini-clad woman.

A recently-aired Canadian commercial for Crush (the soft drink) featured a
group of nude models being painted into a mural.

The CD cover for Bow Wow Wow's album, "I Want Candy" features the lead singer
in gold paint.

The covers for both A Tribe Called Quest albums feature a nude model in
flourescent stripes.

A recent series of Duracell commercials feature a family made up as plastic
dolls.

Movies:

Amazon Jail. Topless dancer in floral print, then later in full-length
stripes.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. At a party scene about one hour into the
movie, one of the women there is wearing nothing but a coat of
matte black paint. This incredibly bad movie was written by none
other than film critic Roger Ebert (must've been an off day).

Bust Video vol. 9 (Japanese). Gold torso on box cover.

Cabin Boy. Multi-armed blue woman (along the lines of old movie critters
animated by Ray Harryhausen) shows Chris Elliot the ropes.

Casino Royale. Two women painted a la "Goldfinger" get involved in bar
brawl. Very quick shot.

Cassanova 4: The Conquest (x-rated). One actress painted as a tiger in one
scene. (not much paint; poorly lit, too)

Cherry 2000. Striped and polka-dotted women in bar scene.

Dance With Death. Catya Sassoon does a routine in a thong bottom and a gold
paint job. One shot in the opening credits is of a dancer with a painted-on
tuxedo; it's not in the film itself for some reason.

Death Becomes Her. In one scene, Bruce Willis tries to give a recently-
undead Meryl Streep that "youthful glow" with a few cans of flesh-tone
paint and a spray gun.

Debi Diamond: Performer of the Year. Still unclear if this is an actual video
or just a promo, but the poster features her nude, painted as a gold award
statuette.

Driller (x-rated). Lesbian scene between two gold-painted women.

The Emerald Jungle. Female lead painted gold from neck down by cult leader.

F (x-rated). Buxom woman with painted tuxedo top, other woman painted gold,
others covered with glitter-paint designs.

The Flintstones. In a scene at a department store, their mannequins are real
people, painted grey or white.

For Richer or Poorer (x-rated). Lengthy lesbian scene where one woman is
painted gold.

Girl's Night Out Pt.4. In the final scene, some of the women have been
painted with patches of red or gold.

Goldfinger. The Criterion edition laserdisk has several pages of production
stills and promotional posters featuring Shirley Eaton.

The Guardian. Jenny Seagrove covered in a tree-like design. Breasts and
crotch covered by prostheses.

Hardbodies 2. Topless models in opening sequence painted as statues.

Henry and June. Extended background sequence with many painted people (blue,
black, and gold) taking part in some huge Parisian street party.

Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. In her "Virgin Dance of the Double Chainsaws"
routine, Linnea Quigley has a pair of twined snakes painted around
her body.

Ice Woman 2. A nude, silver anchorwoman is featured near the end of the movie.

I Love N.Y. Brief fashion shoot at beginning of movie has a nude woman
painted as a statue.

Inside Out, vol. 1. In one segment, a painter creates his paintings by
pouring buckets of paint on women he seduces.

Jason and the Argonauts. The "Medea" character does a dance painted gold in
a temple.

The Kiss. Joanna Pacula in stripes.

Lair of the White Worm. Amanda Donohoe in blue paint.

Love Scenes, vol. 1. A woman executive interviews a male dancer, and then
paints him gold.

Masala. Indian/Canadian co-production featuring blue gods and dancing girls.

Masterpiece (x-rated). A woman artist uses people as her paintbrushes.

The Midas Touch (x-rated). Several women get turned to gold.

Mondo Cane. One segment is on an artist who uses "human paint brushes" (ie.
models bathe in blue paint, then rub against a canvas).

Mondo New York. Annie Sprinkle and one other woman are painted during some
kind of poetry reading.

Ms. Magnificent (x-rated). Two women in full-body paint jobs; one yellow,
one red.

Night Rhythms. A gold woman poses on a piano at an LA lesbian nightclub.

Orgy of the Dead. Topless "Gold Girl Dance." She's gilded _after_
she finishes dancing, unfortunately. Nice anyway.

Ougon ("Gold") (x, Japanese). Nude gold woman on box cover, footage
of photo shoot at beginning of video.

Ougon 2 (x, Japanese). Box cover shots, as well as 20 minutes of gold-
painted sex scenes inside. Features what is probably the first
oral use of the stuff. A definite two thumbs up.

Outland. Nude, silver dancers in bar scenes.

Private Video Magazine #1, "Private Art." Two models agree to let a French
artist paint them. He and his assistant paint them into psuedo-
lingerie.

Prospero's Books. The nymph characters have have various painted designs.

Quest for Fire. Rae Dawn Chong's costume consists of a coat of blue and
black paint.

Return of the Jedi. Jabba the Hutt's scantily-clad dancer is a sandy yellow
color (she falls out of her costume at one point).

Road to Bali. Brief scene about 20 minutes in, involving three gold dancers.

Robocop II. The spokesmodel in a sunscreen commercial (SPF2000, no less)
coats herself with the bluish stuff.

Rocky. The ring girls at the fight (who also escort in Apollo Creed) are
painted silver (no nudity).

Serpent of the Nile ('53, color). Julie Newmar painted gold.

Sex Wars (x-rated). Various green- and gold-painted alien women.

She Comes In Colors (x-rated). An artist pours paint over his models.

Sirens. Two brief scenes showing a statue that is actually a painted model.
In the second of the two, she walks off screen.

600 Fantasy Lane (x-rated). Women painted as horse, tiger, leopard.

Star Trek V. Three-breasted tigress dancer in the bar scene.

Stripped to Kill II. In one dance scene, one of the dancers is painted in
feline stripes.

Sunset Heat. Penthouse Pet Julie Strain is topless, painted silver in one
scene.

The Swinger. (1966) Ann-Margaret rolls and swims across a canvas in a fake
orgy scene. A lot of paint is used here. This has been shown on TBS at
times.

Taboo VII. An artist douses her subjects with paint, who then get friendly
with each other.

Tarzan the Ape Man. Bo Derek painted white by natives.

Tattoo. Maud Adams covered in fake tattoos.

Thief of Baghdad. The vizier brings a blue, multi-armed statue to life.

The Trip. Go-go dancers in 60's psychedelic paint jobs.

Vamp. Grace Jones does a dance number painted in white geometric patterns.

Vampire Circus. A woman painted as a snake (nude, except for a patch over
her crotch and a bald cap) does a dance number with her "trainer"/
partner. The design was swiped directly from a Veruschka photo.

Vengeance of the Zombies. Incredibly bad horror film with a woman painted
gold from the waist up.

A View to a Kill. A nude dancer at the end of the opening credits is painted
with flames in flourescent paint.

Where the Heart Is ('90). Uma Thurman, Crispin Glover, and others are
painted to blend in with classic paintings. Body painting by
Timna Woolard.

Whore of the Worlds (x-rated). Several painted characters.

A Woman Named Desire (Japanese title). Three nude, glitter-covered
dancers in a nightclub.

Video/TV:

Dr. Who, "Claw of Axos." Gold-faced aliens.

Dream On. "Portrait by the Artist on a Young Man." A woman has a snake
"tattoo" around her body.

El Gran Juego de la Oca (Spanish, Telemundo Network). Game show featuring
life-sized game board, one square of which features an artist's easel, where
the artist is painting on a topless model. The host usually spends a minute
two chatting with the artist even if no one lands at that square.

Eye on Hollywood (sometime in 1987). One segment was on body painters, had
interviews with Joanne Gair and some other guy.

Geraldo, "Klub Kidz '94" (2/25). Some kind of club scene discussion. One
lady in a loose fishnet top, painted silver from the waist up.

The Hitchhiker, "Perfect Order." Virginia Madsen painted white.

1991 MTV Video Music Awards. "Nekkid gold women" in Prince's "Gett Off"
production.

1993 Oscars. Gold dancing girls in "A Whole New World" production number.

Penthouse: Art of Desire. Painter rubs paint onto women, who then lie down
on canvas.

Penthouse: Dream Girls of Penthouse. Video segment of Janine Lindemulder
in her silver "Robo-Pet" paint.

Penthouse: Satin and Lace, "Masai Queen." Female explorer meets nice woman
in jungle; they rub ochre paint on each other.

Playboy's Candid Camera (vol. 3?). In one segment, a woman painted as a
statue squirts brainless menials with a water gun.

Playboy's Girls of Rock and Roll. Velveeta '80s music videos, but some
feature girls who have been painted silver, gold, and various
psychedelic patterns.

Playboy's Girls of Spring Break. In one segment, the model pours paints on
herself.

Playboy's International Playmates, "Restless Natives." One segment features
playmayes made up as felines.

Real Sex 2. A stripper is interviewed in the first segment, and at one point
in the act, she douses herself with flourescent paint.

Rock Video Girls 1. Segment involving woman half-painted as statue.

Rock Video Girls 3. Girl painted bluish-silver.

Sexcetera: The World According to Playboy ('84). One segment is on
French body painting artist Helene Guetary. Another segment features
body painters at Black's Beach, a nude beach in California.

The South Bank Show, "Annie Liebowitz." Biography of said photographer.
Camera crew present at Demi Moore painting/photo session.

Star Trek, "The Cage" (also in "The Menagerie"). Susan Oliver in green.

STNG, "Cost of Living." Painted dancer, nude except for patches glued over
her crotch and breasts.

Unmasked Fantasy. Filmed at Cheetah III in Atlanta, some of the dancers
are painted as animals or have painted-on clothes.

Wild, Wild West. Episodes have featured green "Martian" women, and a woman
turned to gold by the Philosopher's Stone.

The World of LSD. One segment features hippie body painters.

Warrant, "Machine Gun." Nude woman covered in tattoos.

Zebra, "Wait Until the Summer's Gone." Old video from '84 or so. A woman
(topless, I think; it's been a while) painted as a zebra covorts
around.

Zhane', "Sending My Love." The female duo is painted gold, but the video is
shot through a tint that pretty much obscures the color.

There are also two books by a guy named "Diakanoff" that are supposed to
be pretty good, but I haven't been able to find either one. A place
called Cinema Secrets in Burbank, CA supposedly has some copies, but I
am currently unable to verify this.

A couple of general photography books by Michael Boys supposedly have a few
painting examples in them. Can anybody confirm this?
There were a few samples in a book called "Color Photography," including one
silver model, and one "painted" with colored glitter.
"Conceptual People Photography" apparently has a nude gold woman on its
cover.

Strip Clubs:

Cabaret Royale in Dallas had a girl who painted herself as her act. She used
these freaky fluorescent paints under a black light.

Deja Vu in Seattle.

Several clubs in Vancouver, BC including the Burnaby Inn.
