I am looking for a serger, but have limited funds. I have one dealer in my
town and the only machine they have near my budget (above it, actually) is
a Bernette 006D with a sale price of $649. (list $849.) Can anyone out
there tell me if this is a good machine at a good price? The only other
machine that interested me is a BabyLock BL 5370 at $499. on sale, but it
is from a sewing store and not a dealer. I would appreciate any
information an experienced shopper out there can give me.

Thanks,

Wendy

Isn't this one of the "Funlock" Bernettes? My SIL has one and has
enjoyed it and had no trouble with it. I have a 334ds Bernette that I
love! After I had my Bernina serger for a couple of years, I splurged
and bought their 1260 sewing machine!!

I have had a Bernette 006D since the summer and love it. It can
really take a lot of heavy duty sewing. I made my daughter a play
tee-pee and it had no problem going through four layers of heavy
denim. It also does well on finer fabrics, too. I do not know much
about whether or not $649 is a good price because I *won* mine in a
raffle draw (yay!) but I do know it was on a factory authorized sale
for $499 earlier this year. Do you need it right away? That is the
bad thing about special sales, IMO; they tend to make me not want to
buy anything at the regular price later on because I feel if it went
on sale once, it could happen again.

I just want to mention that even though my dealer offered lessons with
the Bernette, I couldn't take them until I already had the machine for
a few months. I had no problem learning to use it on my own, between
the owner's manual and the book "Sewing with an Overlock" from the
Singer series. I don't mean that I just figured out how to do the
standard 3 and 4 thread overlock stitches either; I mastered the
rolled hem, flatlock and narrow seam without any problems. My lesson
therefore focussed on proper maintenance of the machine.

So, if you are the type of person that can self-teach on the use of
mechanical devices, you may not need a dealer for lessons. I would
think it would still be important that you have somewhere reliable to
go for service, however. Does the sewing store offer any?

Hopefully someone who is familiar with this brand of Babylock can help
you choose.

I forgot to mention that the Bernette 006D is made by Juki. There is
an equivalent Juki model that can be had for cheaper. Check out
www.sewserg.com for the Juki model number and a price.
