Like to get a pantone number or a thread color/number in Madeira
Aerofil, Mettler, or some other polyester thread. Maybe I'm overthinking
this (per usual) and any old orange would do? Thanks for any advice.

The original Coats & Clark "Jeans" thread is usually pretty close. Since
you don't need to match a pair of jeans, that would work just fine. It's a
gold/orange color. (I'm good at telling what color things are. My DFIL is
also color blind. We coach him through matching things. ;) )
Now, I think that thread is either cotton or cotton/poly. But for any
topstitching you do on the bags, it would look the most like jeans.

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It's a waste of time and just annoys the
pig.
Bill,
Try:
YLI No. 7 Blue Jean Gold (Jeans top stitching range)
or Gutterman Orange shade 350, top stitch thread
http://stanssewingsupplies.com/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=4954529
has 6000m of red/orange levi's jeans topstitching thread for $28!
Gutterman carry jean's top stitching threads in a variety of colours,
but I can't find a chart for them on line- so can't tell you what shade
- sorry! They certainly have a variety of shades that look just like the
RTW top stitch thread on jeans.

Do you want the heavy topstitching thread? If so:
http://store.atlantathread.com/toth750yd.html has either "Lee Gold" or "Levi
Gold"
I prefer the tensile strength of polyester to cotton, fwiw.

Kay, thanks to you and others who put me on the right track. I'm "in
business" again.
