Don't have one, never used one...but from listening to other people, apparently
some Elna sergers require special needles (ELsomethings) for some
stitches, and they're not the easiest to find. Verify if that's
an issue with this model, and if that's a problem for you.
Kay, who doesn't do non-standard bits that are consumed at a fast rate.
I have an Elna 703 DEX bought in 1996. I don't use a serger an awful lot,
mostly just to clean finish edges, but I've been satisfied with this one.
Mine isn't terribly difficult to thread, except for doing the cover stitch,
and maybe that's just lack of practice on my part for that particular
stitch. I never tie on, I always thread from scratch just to stay in
practice for regular serging. Sooner or later you will break a thread and
then you better know how.
Although the EL needles are recommended, you can use any needle. I haven't
found it hard to find the EL needles anyway, because I mail order most
stuff. Cost-wise, I'm not sure how they stack up (I'm not the greatest
shopper in the world either!) but I'm pretty sure they aren't way out of
line.
