On this machine, the reverse stitch mechanism no longer works. I had it
in for repair about a year ago, but it only worked for a short while
then died again. Today, I discovered that the autonmatic buttonhole
also does not work, I have to make buttonholes manually. OTOH, my 30
odd year old White still runs well.
Perhaps it is time to get a new all mechanical machine. (Ron, do you
have any input?)
Incidentally, on another board I saw a description of the newest
Bernina. All singing, all dancing, apparently. And the price is

(I posted back that for twelve grand I want a little car, not just a
sewing machine).

I couldn't find an all-mechanical (home) machine anywhere; there may
be one Bernina still being sold, but it was a basic one IIRC. Seems
like all of the European and Asian machines are computer ones....

A good cleaning and lubricating may solve both issues. If that's a
mechanical model, there's a cam that slides on the bottom shaft to get
reverse. If there's lint/dirt on the shaft, the cam won't slide on the
shaft. Lint/dirt could also be preventing the buttonhole mechanism from
working properly.

There are mechanical Husqvarna, Pfaff, Janome and Singer models.

The Bernina 1008 is a great all mechanical machine from Bernina, and
retails at about £475. It only does square ended buttonholes, but it
does them beautifully. I have a 1005, which I love. It's a great
teaching machine.

I have your manual. Well not yours but one for your machine ;)
The reverse and buttonhole problem are likely caused by the same thing. As
Wayne said there is a Cam the controls the reverse function and the part, in
my experience that gets gummed up is the pin on the actuating lever most
often. This happens due to lack of use.
It is not difficult to pull that apart and clean it up and re-lube it.

I stand corrected: the Pfaff "select" line is mechanical, and $700 to
$1100 where I live.

Worth taking a look. I have a Pfaff 1475, which is a great machine
except for buttonholes. For some reason, it makes terrible buttonholes.
I've also got a 260, which is a great old Pfaff.

Thank you VERY much, Ron. I'll contact you off list.

Thank you, Wayne, I'll try that. I haven't had the base plate off that
machine in about a year - although I also haven't done very much sewing
in the past year, having had two bouts of pneumonia with atendant
hospitalization.
