I know that it would be AWFUL to ruin my treadle (1948 Singer 15-89)
by converting it to electric, but I am hoping to be able to do it in a
way that I can convert it back again.

I have been searching google for how to do this but all I can find is
the opposite!

Can anyone please tell me what type of motor to use and a basic
description of how to put it on? I can have my father do it for me
and he will be able to figure it out once we have the basic
information.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Michelle

You just need a Singer external type motor and a screwdriver! Take the
treadle belt off, bolt the motor on the machine, and pop the rubber
motor belt in place. You should only have a problem if the machine is
too old to have a mounting point for the motor. This used to be a VERY
common upgrade for both treadles and hand cranks.

Try and find an electric motor version of the manual for the machine,
and look at the diagrams for adjusting the belt, and you'll see how the
motor and belt fit the machine.

Thanks Kate! That was the fastest reply ever (I had just enough time
to read the michael jackson thread & watch the youtube video of
thriller. I have never actually seen it because I was too young in
the 80's. I know I got a pdf of my regular treadle manual from
somewhere, ismacs or singer probably, so I will take a look. This
should be easier (for my father!)

Thanks!

I actually have another question (probably not the last either!).

I found an ebay auction for a sewing machine motor that says the motor
turns counter clockwise but that the seller also has motors that turn
clockwise. Which way do I want to turn? (here is the auction, is
this what I am lookin for?
http://cgi.ebay.ca/SEWING-Machine-MOTOR-SERGER-Motor-FISHING-LINE-SPOOLER_W0QQitemZ190256592516QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item190256592516&_trkparms=72%3A792%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
sorry about the long link) I would like to try to buy one locally
unless someone on the group has one in Canada, I already called & left
a message for my sewing machine guy so hopefully he can get ahold of a
motor for me.

thanks again!

as always you gave a great answer! Thanks so much. That one is even
cheaper (both price and shipping) which is good!

I hear the embroidery machine beeping at me, it must be done. I am
making the girls some headbands with low-pile faux fur (pattern here
http://sewing.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ/Ya&sdn=sewing&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.getcreativeshow.com%2FCrafting_Sewing_Conference_Center%2Fcraft_sewing_seminars%2Fheadband.htm
).
The fur is blue and I am embriodering some white snowflakes & hearts.
It is my first time using wash away stabilizer on top, but it is
working excellent! I will do some towels next now that I know how
well it works. Since I am getting off topic I will stop now.

Thanks again!

He should be able to get everything you need. There's a company at the
Center of the Universe (Toronto) that can supply almost anything that's
available. He probably deals with them for parts.

You mean <<<GASP>>> the universe doesn't revolve around Saskatchewan?
LOL. I hope he calls me back sometime, I called this morning and
nothing yet. Usually he calls back within an hour.

Thanks so much! At least now I know they are available in Canada. I
have been searching all day and so far I can only find them to be
shipped from the USA & I don't want to have to mess around with
customs.

As long as the machine as a motor mount screw opening (located under
the handwheel) so that you can attach the motor mount, you can convert
it to a powered machine by purchasing the motor, the motor mount and
screw, and a belt.

Thanks! I saw a website which showed that but I didn't quite
understand until I read your post. It doesn't help that my treadle is
still at my parents house temporarily so I can't look at it until
Saturday. I think I will finally bring it home again that day, it has
been almost a year since I had it in my own home, it will need alot of
attention! We just bought our house in June and have been doing some
renovations so I didn't want it here until now!
