Any new Singer is a piece of garbage...they haven't been good since the mid
60's or so. Can't tell you anything about the Necchi though...older
Necchi's are great just like the singers. I own 7 vintage singers and love
every one. Just goes to show you don't need new and fancy to get a great
stitch out of a great machine! And....buttonholes to die for, btw :-)

That's what I'm hearing. Did some looking around on the web and whatnot and it
looks as though we'll be going for the Necchi. Thanks for your help!

I hate to disagree, and only do so in part.... everyone I know with a high end new
Singer is thrilled with it, I think, like so many other brands it is their new low
end machines that wont hold up well. I personally prefer the old ones like Lori,
and am searching for a 401. Christina

I've had the same Kenmore since the late '60s, and I wouldn't part with it. But
recently, my 13-year-old granddaughter started taking an interest in sewing, and
since I've not looked at machines since the '60s, I didn't know where to begin to
try to help my daughter find her an inexpensive "starter" machine for Christmas
(under $100). We finally found a Necchi for $85, which someone brought in as a
trade-in for a new machine. It's wonderful. It does everything, if not more,
that my old Kenmore does and makes a beautiful stitch. (I don't remember the
model number because she has it at her house, but for an older machine, it's
fantastic, and I'd bet it will outlast some of the newer models.)

Well, that's my 2 cents. I would recommend the Necchi. My mother has a Singer
and hates it, and I can't speak from personal experience regarding Singer, but
from what I've heard others say, it's apparently a love/hate relationship.

Good luck with your purchase.

Singer in the UK is not the best machine to buy

My Necchi is around 37 yrs old and is just fantastic - runs rings round all
these new machines for every day sewing.

Are Necchi still making sewing machines - I thought they went out of
business, in which case
spares might be a problem. That said I've been using a Necchi 7002 for years
with great satisfaction and never needed any spares.
