Hi all,

I just got a new-to-me 1984 Singer 6268 and I have noticed a very strange
problem with the machine slowing down for no apparent reason. It starts
at full speed then gradually slows to a crawl. When I take my foot off the
pedal and put it back on, it will go at full speed, then the problem repeats.
Any insights on what is causing this? Thanks in advance!

Hi Tracy

Your problem sounds like the carbon discs in the foot control are worn. To
test join the 2 cables in the foot control together then plug machine in. If
the machine runs at full speed and doesn't slow down then you will have to
replace the foot control

Good Luck

I have the model 6267 which is very similar. This machine foot is air
driven...could there be a leak somewhere in the cord? Is the connection tight
where it plugs into the machine? I broke the foot on my machine about a year
ago and I think it cost about $20 to replace.

Tracy,
You will need to take the machine into a Singer dealer, and the speed control
unit in the machine checked. The unit has a diapham in it that controls the
speed, ther is a chance yours has a small hole in it allowing the preesure from
the foot control to be lost. The part costs around $29.00 plus the labor to
install. Good luck

Hi,
I am so glad to hear someone talk about the Singer 6268. I would very
much like to know about cartridge #4. In a book by Jackie Dodson, "Know
your Singer", which has the 6268 pictured on the cover, there is mention
that it does entredeux. I have been looking for an inexpensive
cartridge, and knowledge if it is worth getting.

Hi Bill Sutton,
I wanted my post to be in this group mentioning Singer 6268. Do you
know of cartridge #4 and the entredeux stitch? My problem is there
isn't a specific Singer dealer. I have that same diaphragm problem
except it isn't quite that bad yet.

About cartridge number 4, I think that was the one that did borders and
edge finishes, I'm trying to remember as we give our 6268 to my mother
in law about 6 months ago. New cartridges are very hard to find and
used ones tend to run about $50.00 each. As for the speed control, any
good general sewing machine repairman should be able to replace that
part. When we give the 6268 to my mother in law the speed control was
starting to act up, so we had it replaced. Good luck.
