Has anyone has any experiences with the Bernette 720 (it's Bernina's low end
model made in Taiwan). I looking for a basic sewing machine to do some machine
quilting using the invisible thread, (my Singer Featherweight can't handle the
thread).

I read the Thread's article (July 1991) which rated some basic machines; the
Bernette 330 was one they liked. Well I went to a Bernina store and the sale
person said the company has discontinued the 330. She said the 720 was
comparable. The machine is on sale for $300. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a new Bernette 720 and I love it! I paid around $300 for it
and have been quite pleased with it. I am a new sewer but got the
advice of two long time sewers who both have Berninas. So, far I
have only made two shirts on it, but I've been very pleased. It
seems to be a good, basic, all-around machine. It doesn't do any
really fancy things, but those things intimidate me anyway!

Cheers,

I would recommend taking a spool of the invisible thread into the dealer
and testing it out. Bring some fabrics and quilt batting too. Wind a bobbin,
sew a few lines of quilting, etc. This thread is difficult for some machines
to handle so the only way to be sure is to test it.

Twenty-six years! I think this must set a new record for replying
to an old post.

Heaven help us. One of these days reading comprehension will come
back into fashion.

It's not really a reading comprehension thing, google's archive
fails to show the dates of a thread prominently (it appears way off
to the right side separated from the text), so folks get a hit on a
search and respond, not realizing the thing is ancient.

When I click on the thread, but it is through Google Groups, the date
is prominently displayed. But they must be accessing the thread another
way and, like you said, the date must be displayed somewhere else.
