Hi everyone,

I am interested in purchasing a serger, but as I am new to sewing I do not
know what things to look for. The main reason I would like a serger is to
give my garments a neat and professional look. I have looked at a number of
different ones, but would like to hear some opinions of which ones you would
strongly recommend or would not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Karen

Hi Karen,

I had an ancient Baby Lock (about 12 years) that all I used it for was
serging the seams before or after sewing. I have a Viking Huskylock 1002LCD
that I like a lot. I am on a serger list right now that we are having a
serge along and trying a stitch a week. This week is the Flatlock stitch.

I recommend you taking some material with you and test driving several
machines. Can't beat the ones with differential feed that they make now.
They are a great help in keeping from flaring or puckering different types
of material.

I think I test drove about 5 sergers before picking the 1002LCD. It has an
LCD screen that tells me how to thread it, in what order, for every stitch.
It also has a trouble shooting guide you can scroll through as well. Comes
in handy.

I have a New Home that is about 10 years old. I love it. I would
suggest that you go to a sewing center and try out several differents
brands. Lynda

Karen, I have a Viking 1001L and love the differential feed and "advisor
window" (which is much handier than searched through a manual).

I have the Huskylock 1001L ... 5 thread. I liked it at first. It has over
the past couple years gotten very touchy. It no longer serges streched
ribbing onto a sweatshirt without skipping stitches. It never did do the
cover stitch. I'm trading up this month to the new 5 thread Pfaff that has
the cover stitch.
I like the 5 thread because I do much sewing on woven fabric. I like the
results. The cover stitch is to hem knits. It's similiar to twin needle
sewing, but much more "professional" looking. I "played" pn the Pfaff at my
dealers... For the money you spend, that's the best way to go! Don't sit
there and watch... do it yourself! I liked the results, and it was easy to
use, tensions are preset, but can be changed.
