Sears contracts out so there's different makers at different times.. I
bought a kenmore back in 1981... still works great...... and it's been used
hard....... even does heavy duty sewing (bunker coat repairs) I had it in
the shop once after 10 years so they could do one of their *professional
tune-ups * on it....... they had to do very little to it......
I don't know who makes them now........

Janome has been manufacturing all Kenmore sewing machines and sergers for
the last several years -- very reliable.

I heard that it's "White". But others will say not any more.

I purchased a Kenmore Sewing Machine Model 385.19153. It has 167
patterns and 3 button holes. It is made by New Home, It is similar to
Memory Craft 4000. There a few stitches that are different, ie: I have
a butterfly, the Memory Craft has an airplane. I enjoy using the
machine. I have quilted, made jeans, children clothes with the machine.
Sears usually doesn't give classes in our area, but the sales person
was willing to take time to show me the basics.
It was a $500 saving. I can buy a lot of classes for that.

I am not sure who makes them. I used to have before my husband bought me an
ELna sewing machine. It is a very good machine. Sears sells them, but that
all I know about them

In the January, 1999 issue of THREADS magazines, there is an excellent
review of embroidery machines and Kenmore is listed under the JANOME/NEW
HOME along w/Janome, New Home and Elna machines. I was checking out
websites of new machines and it seems the company is dropping the NEW HOME
name and will be JANOME CO.

It varies. Some people love their Kenmores, but the one I got in 1986 was
the worst sewing machine on the face of the earth. I'd suggest quite a bit
of test driving...

I have had a kenmore since about 1976. I love my kenmore. I have had very
little trouble with it. Its only been in the shop for tune ups. The machine
i had before that was a very old kinmore, it only did staight stictch!! and
it was my mothers before me. She also had a kenmore to replace it and I
used to play with it when I was small adn it survived jsut fine. I would
have no qualms about buying another Kenmore. Good luck!!!

Janome Co. makes Elna, Kenmore as well as Janome/New Home. I do understand
another company made Kenmore sometime between the time White making them in
the 80s and Janome began a year or so ago.

My understanding of the way the Kenmore brand works is that they take bids from
different manufacturers. So it really depends on what year your machine was
made - the manufacturer changes from time to time. This is true of all the
Kenmore appliances.

Janome has been making Kenmores for much longer than a year. My 150stitch
(Janome 3000 or 4000 Memory Craft equivalent) is over 4yrs old and is the
second version of high end Kenmore machine. They made a 100stitch for a few
years before my model came out (a few years before I bought it). And of course
now there are two more levels after the 150stitch.

Because this question has come up several times in the past, I did some
research to try and get more "definitive" answers.

I contacted Sears and was given the following information:

White manufactured Kenmores until the 1950s
Soryu manufactured Kenmores from 1950-1977
Maruzen manufactured Kenmores from 1977-1987
Janome has manufactured Kenmores from 1987 to the present

I contacted Janome and obtained the following information:

Janome America Inc. (formerly The New Home Sewing Machine Co.), located in
Mahwah, NJ, is a subsidiary of The Janome Sewing Machine Company (Tokyo,
Japan) and the exclusive U.S. distributor of products bearing the Janome
brand. Jamac Inc., located in the Chicago area, is also a subsidiary of The
Janome Sewing Machine Company and is the distributor of Janome products for
Sears. The gentlemen I spoke with at Jamac confirmed that Janome had been
manufacturing Kenmore sewing machines and sergers for approximately 20
years. He also informed me that a new Kenmore website should be up and
running by mid-October featuring the Kenmore line of sewing machines and
sergers. Apparently, Kenmore sewing machines and sergers are manufactured
in the same plants and under the same specifications and strict quality
control requirements as the machines sold under the Janome brand.

I am merely passing along this information as I received it after making a
few phone calls and sending a few e-mails; if any of it is incorrect, please
don't hold me responsible. Thanks!

I want to add my thank you too, Chris. It was very good of you to do
that research and post it here for us.
