Pardon my ignorance but what's an armscye? I've been sewing for a few years
but it's only recently i've come across the word.

It's the curved section of the body of the garment into which the sleeve
is sewn. The top of the sleeve, which is sewn to the armscye, is called
the sleeve cap.
