Anyone out there heard of this book/course. It's by Julia Cameron. I'd
appreciate any opinions.

Hello Rich,

There is a list online you can subscribe to. Send a message to

You were asking for opinions. The material is great. Unfortunately
today the publishers, Putnam, have engaged in an act of intimidation
and terrorism against private citizens' right to congregate and freely
exchange information. See the letter below to the listowner.
No one is making any money out of this, least the listowner who is
seriously ill and finds much help and healing through this list
she created. We need support from the net against this act of
terrorism against our basic rights as private citizens.
Nothing has been sold, nor is this a course. This is a support group
from around the world.

Because of this, we are considering a boycott of Putnam and its
associates as well as all Artist's Way products.

Sincerely,
Claudia

Mes amis,

I am afraid we will have to close up shop. I can think of no other
response, unless any of you have any ideas.

Re: THE ARTIST'S WAY by Julia Cameron

Dear Ms. Chambers:

The Putnam Berkley Group, Inc. ("Putnam") is the exclusive North American
publisher of the Jeremy P. Tarcher/Putnam Book entitled THE ARTIST'S WAY:
A SPIRITUAL PATH TO HIGHER CREATIVITY by Julia Cameron (the "Work"). The
Work was first published in 1992 and more than 600,000 copies have been
sold to date. The copyright in the Work is registered in Ms. Cameron's
name in the U.S. Copyright Office.

The Work is currently included in Putnam's commercial on-line Web site at
http://www.putnam.com and http://www. berkley.com, and Putnam is planning
additional on-line applications, including a registry for study groups
using the Work.

It has come to our attention that you are offering an on-line course (the
"Course"), under the name The Artist's Way List at the World Wide Web sites
given above under your name. While we have no objection to on-line study
groups and discussion and commentary on the materials and methods included
in the Work, the Course goes way beyond this type of activity.

The Course copies extensively from the Work, lifting large portions of
original text written by Ms. Cameron and protected by copyright, and copies
many distinctive elements of the Work that have come to be associated by
the public with THE ARTIST'S WAY, including, Morning Pages, Artist's Date,
Check-In, and Sacred Circle Rules, among others. The Course also
wrongfully appropriates THE ARTIST'S WAY name, as to which substantial
consumer recognition and good will have attached as a result of broad sales
of the Work, other published works by Ms. Cameron and Mr. Bryan using the
name THE ARTIST'S WAY and THE ARTIST'S WAY workshops. Finally, by affixing
to the Course the copyright notice Copyright * 1995 Lucia Chambers, you
wrongfully claim copyright in Ms. Cameron's copyrighted materials.

As a result of the Course's use of THE ARTIST'S WAY name and the false
designation of copyright ownership, the public is likely to be confused
about the origin or source of the Course materials.

This is a blatant infringement of Putnam's and Ms. Cameron's copyright
rights, as well as trademark infringement and unfair competition under
Federal and State laws.

We therefore demand that you immediately remove the Course in its entirety
from the World Wide Web and cease and desist from all reproduction,
distribution, promotion, sale or other exploitation thereof in whole or in
part in any and all media, electronic or otherwise, as well as from all
uses of THE ARTIST'S WAY name except as a factual reference to the title of
the Work.

Please confirm your compliance with the foregoing in writing, no later
than March 22, 1996, by return E-mail to our Web site address or by fax to
(212) 447-5313. As further assurance that all your unauthorized uses of
the Work and THE ARTIST'S WAY name have ceased, such confirmation should
include copies of your communications to all subscribers notifying them of
the discontinuation of the Course and to all sites and sources through
which you have distributed the Course instructing them to cease all copying
and distribution.

If any materials or other goods or services using the Work or THE ARTIST'S
WAY name have been offered and/or sold for a fee or any other financial
consideration, your response should include a complete and accurate
accounting thereof.

This is not intended as a complete statement of Putnam's and Ms. Cameron's
rights in this matter, which are expressly reserved.

My direct phone number is (212) 951-8556.

Sincerely yours,

Gina S. Anderson
Deputy General Counsel
