I grew up playing Sonic on Master System and now I've got a touch of
nostalgia and Sonic-playing frenzy and I've started playing the Genesis
version (the original). Now, my problem is this: I knew the 8-bit
version inside-out, where are the hidden lives and the chaos emeralds
and everything, and now I'm trying to play the Genesis version in the
same fashion. But, there's the rub, I cannot seem to find the extra life
"monitor" on the very first level, Green Hill - Zone 1. I've tried all
my 8-bit Sonic tricks, jumping into chasms hoping that somewhere down
there I would find an extra life and a jump spring but no luck. The
gameFAQs on-line don't seem to help... So, is there an extra life on
this level? And can you say as a rule that there has to be an extra life
box on every level or is the situation a bit more random in the 16-bit
version?
Thanx for any info!
Regards,
- R.
I am pretty sure there is one behind the waterfall, you have to go past
the bridge, then double back to the left(after dropping down). Once you
get behind it, you can drill through the wall and there should be some
shoes, invincibility and an extra life.

That's 1-2, I don't think that 1-1 has anything. Sonic 1's focus is on
the bonus rounds, you get your extra lives from getting a ton of rings
and points from the bonus rounds before you get the Chaos emerald.
There are extra lives in at least one of the levels from each Zone, but
not every level.

Ok, thanx! Now I can concentrate on playing the game. ;)
I've found the hidden compartment to the left behind the "shoes" but
there're no extra lives there. However, there is one under the great
waterfall when you take the bottom-most route and jump over some spikes
at the end. And there is another one on top of the loop, I use extra
speed to get that one. Two extra lives in one stage... Wierd!
Cheers!

The levels in Sonic 1 are some of the best designed levels of any
game, ever. Everything is there for a reason related to Sonic's
gameplay, rather than just for looks, or just to affect the difficulty.
It wasn't Sonic's 'tude that hooked me into playing that game to
death, it was the level design and the speed at which you could blast
through most of them *and* collect items along the way. Awesome game.
