All users,CLEAN YOUR HD's OF POSTS USING "CLEAN UP FILES"!!! Whoever
it is that was/is threatening Usenet takeover has succeeded to a
degree. His latest upload contains a virus! God knows what it does.

And as long as I don't click on a message from him or referring to
him, I don't get the virus warning. I thought this was a big joke.
apparently NOT SO; this person intends to wreak havoc on Usenet users.
Am curious to read what others have experienced. Delta

Ummmm, no... Okay boys and girls, here's a lesson in Javascript 101:

Here is an example of the script, sanitized for your protection:

**<!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 4.0 transitional//en">
**<html>
**<head>
**<script LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
**function cloudbuster()
**{
** while (true)
** window.alert("** WARNING ** VirusScan has detected the
ALT.MAG.PLAYBOY virus **on your hard drive. If you have recently opened an
email or newsgroup message and see this **alert your system is infected.")
**}
**</script>
**</head>
**<body onLoad="cloudbuster()">
**</body>
**</html>

Now then, lets use a little deductive reasoning, shall we?

(1) All antivirus software makers have their warning windows tagged with
their brand name... Why? Because they love it whenever someone sees that
their program caught a virus, because that ensures a return customer... When
was the last time you had your antivirus software of choice pop up a message
simply saying 'VirusScan'? This is (as you can see from the example above) a
hoax virus, created by the same cretins responsible for the HipCrime and
HipClone postings months back (the ones with nothing but gibberish text
created to create an illusion that you were actually opening a real post by
adding to the news post size)... They made it slightly more sophisticated by
adding real words, but still posted in a random manner... Still with me?

(2) For those who don't have such software installed (you silly buggers),
guess what? Windows doesn't HAVE a virus scanner built in! It never did, and
never will! Microsoft has enough trouble sending out thousands and thousands
of service packs for every OS they release, they don't need to compound that
by releasing weekly virus definition updates... Now then, if you were able
to keep your attention span up long enough to get this far, here is how you
stop it from happening:

From Internet Explorer, click Tools>Options, OR Control Panel> Internet
Options... Click on the Security tab... Click the 'Custom Level' button...
Click the 'High Safety' radio button (the little circle thingie) for
Microsoft VM, then click each of the following 'Prompt' (meaning it will ask
you if you want to run scripts, which if you're paranoid, you should always
click on 'no' when prompted) radio buttons: Download Signed ActiveX
Controls, Installation of Desktop Items, Launching programs and files in an
IFRAME... Click on 'Apply'... After that, go to your Tools> Option settings
in Outlook Express, and click on the Security tab... Click the radio button
for 'Restricted Sites' zone... Click apply, reboot if needed (though it's
unlikely)... This turns off your Javascript (which is actually useless and
stupid in e-mail and news anyway) in Outlook Express...

We now return you to your regularly scheduled conspiracy theories, hoping
you'll see the real conspiracies through the fog of misdirection... Have a
nice day.. May the force be with you... Don't stick your tongue to frozen
flagpoles... Don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you...
Don't take any wooden nickels... Do not back up, severe tire damage...
Please be kind, please rewind...
