There are virtually no chemical weapons that are likely to be used that a
gas mask would be effective against because most such weapons enter through
or attack the skin.

I disagree, to a point. Most advanced chem weapons such as Sarin, GA,
GB, etc do use skin entry points, but the nature of the threat does not
account for weapons of that level of advancement unless they are
purchasing said weapons from a more advanced supplier, such as the fmr
USSR, which is highly unlikey.

Most of the weapons they are likely to use, mustards, etc, may cause
welts and painful sores on the skin, but a mask would prevemnt death.

If nerve gas is the concern, then you're better off running into your
'tornado room' in your house (if your tornado room is the basement,
choose the attic instead), stuffing a towel under the door, and
injecting yourself with atropine and 2PAM chloride - but ONLY in the
case of a nerve attack, or the injections might kill you.

On the other hand, you can spend multiple thousands on MOPP gear. ;-)

Shalom!

There are many on ebay for sale. Most of them have outdated filters
though. If you could get a new filter it would work. But still you have
to know when the attack is coming. I was thinking of keeping mine so
when I paint my car.. but they're selling for $200 so it's worth it.

The following place is taking backorders for gas masks and currently has
chemical suits in stock. What they have changes frequently though. Also
below is a link to Israel's gas masks and stuff they have for sale for the
public there. I don't think we can buy them though. But notice what a
selection they have! We here are stuck with buying old surplus masks
usually, and most places are out of stock on those. Also below is a link
which says that the U.S. House has gas masks for its members...

Actually a gas mask salesperson I spoke with said that if you don't have a
gas mask, then to use a wet terrycloth and breath through that. He said it
was better than nothing. I guess this stuff gets into your skin and eyes
too, so I would wrap up in something to protect the skin as well.

Now plastic garbage bags would not allow your skin to breathe, so anyone
know of a poorman's chemical suit?

Note that if they attack us in this manner, I would assume that they would
target a building with a lot of people in it. The fumes would be
concentrated there. I don't know if they would have enough of this stuff to
say attack an entire city. Anyway, persons under such an attack may just
need to "buy enough time" to get outside. Comments?

Hmm, a genuine chemical attack would neet to take place where a lot of
people congregate out in the open. A building is a poor conduit for a
chemical attack, unless it was secretly released into the ventilation
system...secretly because it takes time to move about, and if it weren't
secret then the people could just evacuate.

No - I'd look for crowded stadiums, especially ones with a dome. Movie
theaters maybe, concert halls, large gatherings outdoors, that sort of
things.

Buildings with lots of walls, rooms, and doors just don't work very well.

Take the Sarin attack in Tokyo for instance. It was brilliant because
Sarin is heavier than air, and the subway is underground and very heavy
in pedestrian traffic.

It could have been worse - Japanese subways are very well ventilated,
and Sarin is a monster. Something on the order of a GB or GX would have
been far far worse because it's resistant to ventilation. (Which, by the
way, would make it a lot harder to release in a buildings ventilator
system).

You just don't apply chem/bio weapons in the same way as a bomb. There
is a threat there too though, and it is found in contact agents, that
are liquid, and attack by touching them. An aerial explosion with a
contact agent over a city could contaminate surfaces over a large area,
and do a great deal of initial damage, plus make that whole area
uninhabitable until a hazmat team could clean it up.

Also a web search on chemical protective clothing or equipment should turn
up information on industrial suppliers. (I did this but didn't take the time
on all the sites) A civilian looking for personal protection does not need
the more specialized military stuff just a similar level of protection.

This will sound crued...but if there were a chemical attack, isn't there a
distinct possibility that it would also eat away at your skin ? So, you
have a gas mask on while your skin is being shredded ?? Crued....but
seriously. Would you want to still be breathing....

If, and I mean if a bio or chem attack occurs it will be too late for a gas
mask as it will take numerous people getting sick before the authorities
realize there has even been an attack. Also, a friend of mine recently
bought an Israeli gas mask on eBay for about $100.00 and received it all
including the sealed filter which had "expired" years ago! Besides the non-
expired filters only last 5-8 hours. Save your money, buy some extra canned
goods, stock up on some clean treated water and relax. Also, unless you have
a full chem suit, gas mask with three days worth of filters per mask, you
are wasting your hard earned money. Best of luck

Actually it's much worse than that, there is a chemical agent that is
absorbed through the skin that affects the central nervous system causing
death in two seconds.

Why would it be the end of the world if bin Laden did some small chem

...---... ...---... ...---...
what is the point of buying a gas mask ? if its the crop sprayers you are
worried about then gas masks are NOT going to help you the agent will not be
a gas it will be a liquid therefore more than likely a contact agent and not
a gas agent as crop sprayers do not spray a gas ! I could go on and on but
its probably pointless...

welp,
it sounds kinda lipe panic , and if u will not get an early warning
that u have been attacked , then gas mask wont do u any good ,
u have 2 put it 9 seconds from attack.
BTW - it is not true that it wont be useful , unless they will use VX
nerve gas which can penetrate through the skin.
musturd gas is not lethal , unless inhaled (though it will cause
injuries).
to the point - www.shalon.co.il is the site of the manufacturer of
gas masks for the IDF and israely civilians , considerd 2 be with the
highest defence factor in the civil market and it enables u to drink
water with the mask on , and another attractive features.
i dont know if they sell the military brands 2 civilians.
have fun,
