Any chance of compiling a brief history of PGP, showing how it's
evolved (e.g. algorithms, features, etc) over the early (and indeed
later) versions?

David.

I would like to do that ...but it is a major undertaking....For my own
interest I am starting with ver 1 to v 263 which are well documented...it
becomes more difficult as one tackles v 5 and 6.....there is a lot of
obscurity as exactly who did what ...

As you can see..it is difficult to get ver 1 source code...i searched in
all the ftp sites...cant find it...it somehow has disappeared...and by the
way P Zimmerman's book PGP Source book is out of print....this makes me
very weary of using the newer windows versions without satisfying myself
that they are kosher...

Steve

P.s. Stray cat thanks for the search output...only two ftp sites had ver 1
source...but these have been deleted..so I am back at square one....Anyone
with ver 1 source ..please come forward.... It would be nice to have a
site with all the versions and full documentation....maybe i will do that
one day...but lots of work...major project undertaking

Fellow Universiry of Exeter Computer Scientist Adam Back has, as Stray
Cat pointed out in another post, a document called "PGP Timeline" at
http://www.dcs.ex.ac.uk/~aba/timeline/

Then there's the PGP Interactions page: www.stat.uga.edu/~rmarquet/pgp/

I guess the answer is "Do we need more than these?". A full-blown Day 1
to Now account/history could probably be written, but would need a lot
of co-operation from PRZ et al.

I found the source code in an ARJ archive (pgp10src.arj) which I have
successfully downloaded. Obviously, the signature file for the source
archive (included in the pgp10.zip) doesn't apply to it, so although I
do have source code, I don't know if it's the *original* (untampered)
source code.

agreed, on both accounts.
