I thought I'd throw this one out just to change the subject from the war
back to alarms....

I've had a few unexplained false alarms lately, on some of my older
installations where I didn't use pet motions, and after a bit of
investigating, it has come down to this. Our severely cold weather lately
has forced mice to look for warmer haunts, with the effect that they are
getting into homes not normally inhabited by mice, and setting off the
motions. A couple of strategically placed traps in each instance has caught
the mice, and solved the problem; however, if anyone in cold climates is
experiencing this kind of problem, maybe you should check for mice.....

Today with all of the filtering, processing, and immunizing of motion detector,
mice are not much of a problem. Those who were around at the beginning of PIR's
well remember the bi-annual mouse invasions. In the spring they come inside to
nest. In the fall the come in to get out of the cold.

Jim, I guess that makes me a "newcomer" then. A few years ago, I saw a lot
of this happening on alarm systems I installed in the country. That was one
of the things that made me make the decision to install only pet immune
motions. However, and unfortunately, this was a takeover, and the client saw
no need to pay to upgrade from those crappy Bravo 2 standard DSC
motions......

Hey ! That's life in the fast lane......

One spring I had a series of false alarms from a liquor store in Canton, CT.
After a while several sensors would not set up at all. I went into the
attic to inspect the wiring. A mouse (or several mice) had discovered that
cable insulation makes for soft bedding in their nests. We had to reroute
all of the wiring to avoid further problems. It was a royal PITA.

We had a good one recently.
Auto mechanic kept having the motion in his main bay go off with no evidence
of an intruder. Techs checked the motion, even replaced it just in case.
Looked around and saw no evidence of critters of any sort. Motion was
sealed up good so no bugs inside.
Problem kept happening.
I ended up on the next service call with another tech. We were going
through all the obvious stuff when the heater kicked on. Column of hot air
blows across the bay and causes the first page of a big 2' by 4' wall
calendar to swing up. So the ir sees the moving heat and the microwave sees
the motion....
He clipped a small weight to the bottom of the calendar and no problems
since.

Nice calendar too...

Beach scenes...

Hmmm is that really your name or the results of looking at the calendar?

Do you know the difference between a bunch of smart midgets and a girls track
team?

The midgets are a bunch of cunning runts.
