Was poking around the caddx site, and saw the NX-590E Ethernet
interface for the Caddx panels.

Does this extender card offer an open interface on the network side or
is the format proprietary to their CS software? I saw someone
(http://tinyurl.com/2y4j6) who had some Windows software that
interfaced to it, but my core HA systems are all non-Windows, so that
is uninteresting to me. (Also, did't particularly like the GUI and
I would prefer more of a web-services-like interface instead to
connect to the other HA components)

Hi Don,

Caddx says they're working on an embedded web server for the 590E. There's
no telling just yet how much functionality will be included. It's primary
purpose is for an interface to a campus monitoring system using
Osborne-Hoffman receivers.

Somewhere I have a copy of the protocol document for the NX-590E. I can't
just send it to you but if I can find where I put it I can answer questions
for you.

Regards,
Robert

I did some testing of this unit about a year ago so anything
I say is from memory (and I am getting older!). There also have
been a few new software revisions since.

The IP module sent Alarm Signals to a dedicated IP Address,
this address was a dedicated IP receiver that (I believe) used
encryption to pass the signaling. (Forget about this unless you want to
crack the encryption).

If I recall, the module would also send signals to an SMTP server
(E-Mail). This would be what you want as it's well documented and
easily implemented.

This module was the most sophisticated thing that I've ever seen in
the security industry.

It has a module on the module that's 10 times more powerful than the
panel itself. It has a Motorola Dragonball Processor running uClinux!

http://www.uclinux.org/

It has a working Web Server embedded that comes with uClinux. Only
problem is it serves the one default page in memory.

You can access the uClinux module via the RS232 connector or telnet.
If you have the time and aptitude this thing is a hardware (software)
Hacker’s Nirvana.

Any questions, pop me an E-mail

I think that this is a topic that needs to be further explained. There are
some Manufacturers who have an IP Routers for their equipment, and some are
just slaves. I know from the DMP side of things that they have both. A
Router which is totally two way from the panel, and provides for remote
programming. And a Router (Slave), that can be outfitted to any
Manufacturers Control Panel, which it also can be remotely programmed. They
also have an ePAD which is a web server based HTML Interface for controlling
DMP Panels across a network.

If anyone has extensive knowledge about any other Manufacturers IP Routers,
it would be beneficial for everyone to know what's available, the
limitations, costs, etc.. Just a thought.

I route over 90% of all alarm signals across the Internet, and use Network
Cameras for Video Verification. I do not install any Residential, all
commercial. It's been a very sucessful 03'.

I'm not a CADDX/Interlogix/GE employee, but I believe their plan is to
eventually support their full published Home Automation interface on the
NX-590E. This is the protocol that's been available for a while on their
serial port interface and that I used to write the vKey Virtual Keypad
software.

I think, if this is ever released, it will provide exactly the type of
platform independent web-services you're looking for. I know they've been
working on it for quite a while, but I think it get's pushed to the
background in favor of other tasks. Plus, I'm sure the acquisition by GE
didn't help things along.

I've been waiting anxiously for this to be released. It seems that almost
everything I do these days involves some type of platform independent web
interface.

(BTW, I've played around with a Java version of my vKey Server (no client
interface) that provides a web service interface to the CADDX panel like you
requested. I've tested it on Windows and Linux, but I've never pursued it
since I figured the NX-590E would provide better functionality and make my
work obsolete.)

Again, I'm not actually in the "loop" at CADDX so this information could be
way off.
