Here's the problem. I have the Napco Magnum 1000e installed in my home
(by the previous owner, without a monitoring contract). I tried to add a new
user code the other day. I followed the directions in the Installation Guide
but things still went wrong. Instead of the new code being accepted, the alarm
was set immediately and went off. Neither the old user codes or new one that I
added will clear the alarm. Nothing seems to clear the alarm. I ended up
disconnecting the battery, AC power, and siren wires. If I reinstall the
power, the system becomes armed and goes off in a few seconds.

Now, I have a non-functioning alarm system. I called a local alarm company who
wants about $100 to reset the system.

Is there a quick and easy way to reset the system to default? Is there
anything I can do, ouside of spending the $100 for a 10 minute visit?

Thanks in advance.

YOU SAID: "Now, I have a nonfunctioning alarm system. I called a local alarm

I said:
That is what you should have done in the first place. Called a service company.

You can try the default dealer code, which is 456789. In most cases the
alarm company changes this to prevent the homeowner from servicing his own
system. That way they can charge you $100 for reprogramming the system -- a
ten to fifteen minute job.

If you can't get into the panel at all, you can just replace it. The whole
thing costs about $113 retail. Call if you need help.

I actually pay a tad less, but I also mark it up a few percent to earn a
living.

Same Subject different chapter

On my Napco 1000 a smoke detector went off and now I have fire/tbl on the
keypads and I can't seem to reset system ...smoke detecor has steady red
light.
I called my alarm guy, but he is tough to get (retired still maintains his
installs) is there an easy way to do this.

Thanks

If the panel has been wired correctly, with the pgm output used for smoke
reset, hold down button '9' for about 5 seconds. The Smoke sensor should
reset immediately, and after about 15 seconds, the fire/trouble light should
extinguish.

Note which smoke has a steady red light on it as this is the one that caused
the alarm. Press and hold the [9] key for a few seconds until it makes a
funny chirp. This will reset the smoke detectors. If the alarm sounds again
right away, call the central station to let them know it's not a fire. Enter
the disarm code to stop the noise and wait for your alarm tech to come out
and service the smokes.

You can service the smokes yourself, but if you're already under contract
you should let the tech do it.

Pressing key the #9 key (reset) should momentarily remove voltage to the
detector and also reset the keypad. That is, if the option to reset fire has
been chosen in programing.

By the way can I just replace the fire detector 4 wire for a newer better
model or do I need to do something at the controls to let the system know
there is a new detector
I pay by the service call so if I can do it myself it would be as M. Stewart
would say ...A Good Thing

For example the Firewolf 4-Wire Photoelectric Smoke Detector from Bass Home
Electronics for $45.00

Any 4 wire 12 volt smoke sensor with normaly open contacts can be used.
Just wire it in to replace the old one, then reset the panel and test the
operation of the new sensor.

Make sure you power down the system so you don't blow a fuse on the smoke power
wires and notify central to not respond for an hour or so, while doing the
change over. Test it when wiring is completed. Check with central to see if
they've received the signal and then tell them to put back on line.

Yes, you can replace any 12-Volt, 4-wire smoke with pretty much any other.
Just choose a photoelectric model. The Napco FW4 "Firewolf" is fine. System
Sensor also makes some good ones. A lot of folks here also like ESL
(Sentrol) smokes. I carry all of these brands and some are a bit less
expensive than the Firewolf model.
