I was wondering what everyone experiences for the life of a motion sensor.
Today I changed a DSC BRavor 300 i believe and it lasted there without
causing problems for 5 years. Just curious.

I have a couple of Colorodo Optic units still installed and operating. About 20
years old.

The expected life of most modern electronic devices is 10 years. Some last
longer, some not as long, but 10 years is a good baseline average.

Agreed. Some well-built panels and devices last well beyond the average.

The thing that "bugs" me is that Edwards built this panel to last but no
longer manufacture some components (like the microphone pre-amp module)...
Other parts are hard to come by as well... and extremely dear (expensive)
when you do... Every 6500 and older panels from other manufacturers that
we've upgraded wind up sitting in our parts locker for that time you might
need a bell card or smoke module... My wife accuses me of being a
"pack-rat" at home. If she ever saw our parts locker... :-)

I wish I'd known about your "parts locker" when I serviced an Edwards panel
at the Eureka/Six-Flags Ramada Inn several years ago... Had to retrofit some
non-Edwards stuff to replace a malfunctioning module...otherwise system is
still going strong after 30+ years.

i once had the worst service call anyone coundt think about with one of
those 6500 custom...

the setup was in a religious comunity and the panel was just under the main
waste water line from the upper floor...

on top of the main box was a large 12x12 4 inch deep electical pulling box
where 4 2 inch pipe were comming to from the panel under...

that box had been setup by a very bad electrician and was all open caused of
many modification by some really bad guys that after pulling wires from the
box were going free in the ceilling and not passing in holes....so no more
cover in there...

the waste pipe got full and was pluged,so the plumber went down to the 90
degree couppling on top of the all opne electical box and gave a few gentle
tap on the pipe...

of course it broke down...and where the waste water were going too???? in
the lectric box!!!!!

the panle got all soaked up and the bottom of the box had no pipe and no
holes so the stuff stayed there...

when i came in the palce the breaker had given up and the panel was
down...(batteries were still there but a fuse had blown)....

after i removed every damn board cleaned it with alcool and dried it, i
reasembled the panel and only the fuse for the batteries was blown all the
rest was still working ok....

i was really surprised...told edwards after...they stopped building it
allready and told me that was one of the reason they stopped..was too
tough...

Not so... I've seen some Guardall units (Chubb) still goin' strong after 25
years in a couple of "London Drugs" stores. Mind you they retailed for
around $270.00...
