Hello. I am looking for a device that will detect if
someone has a hidden tape recorder on them. I
understand that such a device does exist, and is
available from several spy shops.

Everywhere I have looked, these are very expensive.
Is there anywhere that I could rent one? Around how
much would this cost? Does anyone have any other
information that might be useful? Thanks in advance,
and I apologise if this message is off topic for any
of these groups.

I will attempt to answer your question as best as possible
while attempting to stay on topic of this newsgroup.

I can see the possibility of needing the security now a days
with all of the hidden videos and tape recordings which I
believe to be an invasion of privacy.

Forget renting the equipment.
Rent a private investigator if its really that bad.

The first thing that you can do is purchase an Acoustic
Noise Generator that will defeat such listening devices as
hidden microphones, spike microphones, RF transmitters or
transmitters in AC outlets.

It accomplishes this by emitting a blanket of unfilterable
noise ( pink noise ) which results in a loud HISS on the
listening device. The area of coverage is up to 150 square
foot and they retail for about 200.00.

The next thing would be a Carrier Current, Subcarrier
Detector which will detect wireless intercoms or room
monitors including your telephone line for hidden current.
Approximately 350.00

Now to actually answer your question, there is a silent alarm
type of R.F. Transmitter Detector combination Tape Recorder
Detector that is designed to be worn during face to face
conversations.

It vibrates when in the presence of hidden listening,
recording devices. This includes Radio Frequency
transmissions as well as the magnetic fields generated by an
operating tape recording device. These units are as small as
a pack of cigarettes and weigh only 6 oz.

Retail 900.00

You can spend as much as you want to when it comes to
counter surveillance.

Try this phone number :

210-656-2348 and ask for a catalog or a retail outlet near
you.

Cool toys. How about this: Don't say anything you might later regret.

Naaaaah. Too simple huh?

I don't suppose this person would like to share WHY they would need such
a thing??

Just curious.

Save your money.

The schlock gadgets from the spy shops will detect *some* machines
*sometimes*, if the antenna is within a few inches of the recorder.

The antenna is a flat paddle kind of arrangement you wear on the
inside of your wrist maybe underneath your watchband. A cable goes up
your sleeve to the box in your shirt pocket.

You are supposed to develop a technique to be able to wave your wrist
all around the person you suspect of using a tape recorder.

Good luck.

And considering the things will not detect at all many of the
recorders out there, and of the ones it will detect, only at close
ranges, the utility of the piece is very small. The most difficult
recorders to detect are the micro recorders which are the ones
typically used body worn.

Spy shops are not recommended places to purchase equipment. For many
reasons.

The toy recorder detector is made by Research Electronics Inc. If you
have to have one, you can buy it from them directly and not get ripped
off by the spy shops.

With respect to the other posters on this thread the only effective method
is a complete frisk no less no more....hard to do when you want to be
unobtrusive and only works with what they have on them....

There are such devices and they do work well. The problem is, if you
suspect you are being recorded, there are many more efficient ways to do
it. RF is the most likly method. The recorder would be remote. A tape on
the room you are using could also be possible. Rooms can be listened in on
from a distance using a lazer aimed at a window to the room. Accoustic
generators can be purchased that set up white noise so these devices won't
work. Microwave can also be used but is harder to stop (wire mesh might
work)

The best way to combat this would be to bring in a professional debugger.
Most can be obtained through private investigators.

My one word of advise is that the room will only stay clean for a short
time after cleaning. You must limit access to these "clean" rooms.

You could put a magnetron (as from a microwave oven) about chest
level near the door of the conference room with circuitry
to pulse the high voltage for about 1 millisecond ten times per
second. As people walk past it will fry recorders or wireless
mikes unless they were specificly designed to take such abuse
which isn't likely. It will knock out most semiconductor based
electronics including electronic watches, pagers, cell phones, etc.

Unless someone is wearing a pacemaker the brief exposure from
walking past will be harmless. That saves the embaressment
of having to find and shut off or remove their recorder.
Of course, you should be nice enought to ask them not to bring
electronic equipment to the meeting before hand.

You can also use such a device to sweep for electronic bugs.
It doesn't help find them but it will render most devices
permanently inoperable from a couple of feet away. You have
to first remove your own electronics like phones or clocks from
the room and adjacent walls.

Firstly, these tape recorder detectors are not "fool-proof" and
in fact specialized tape recorders can be built (and readily)
purchased which will elude tape-recorder detectors. That
being said....next comment.

The average price is around $250 - $450 RETAIL price.
But to be perfectly honest, anyone who pays more
than $250 (at the VERY MOST!!) is getting ripped-off
big time.. There are about 6 different models on the
commercial market made specically for covert tape-recorder
detection (well 6 that I know of anyway).. You've got your
Research Electronics model, your ISA (Information
Security Associates) model, and Martin L. Keisers
firm also sells a few small body-worn combo
tape recorder/RF detectors. Plus a couple from lesser
known firms.. but all in all.. they all retail several hundred
dollar range. I think Keisers model is actually the cheapest
of the bunch; despite his general overpriced products.

and no.. I do not believe that any place exists which
would rent such equipment.

If you think Kaiser's prices are too high, you obviously have been
looking at someone who resells his stuff and marks up the price.

Kaiser's prices are dirt cheap. They are so reasonable compared to
others out there, that you wonder if you are getting ripped off not
getting what you actually do get.

Don't bleam Kaiser for high prices, blame wherever you were shopping.

Kaiser does not have dealers, by the way. His prices are the same to
all.

I will forward *serious* product inquiries along to Kaiser if they are
emailed to me. No lids, no kids, no space cadets.

hi bd...
There are only a couple of decent tape recorder detectors on the market but
they have their limitations because they are based on proximity to the
recorder.
The theory is head bias detection that detects when the recorder is in record
mode.
Ideally, the best recorder detectors are those that are installed in fixed
locations like your office doorway. Obviously these have their limitations.
Portable detectors are very limited in performance and can sometimes
false...especially the vibrating -type combo rf and tape detectors.
Just though I'd let you know.
