NORTHBROOK, Ill., USA - Oct. 22, 2002 - - For the first time, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) and its affiliate, Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada (ULC) have announced the joint publication of two, binational, harmonized Standards. In August of this year, UL and ULC published two Standards for fire extinguishers: ANSI/UL 711/CAN/ULC-S508, the Standards for Rating and Testing of Fire Extinguishers, and ANSI/UL299/CAN/ULC-S504, the Standard for Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers.
The scope of ANSI/UL 711/CAN/ULC-S508 includes rating and performance requirements of fire extinguishers used on Class A, B, C, D and K fires. The requirements also cover performance during fire tests of fire-extinguishing agents on Class D fires.
The scope of ANSI/UL 299/CAN/ULC-S504 includes construction and performance requirements - exclusive of fire test performance - of portable dry chemicals and dry powder (Class D) fire extinguishers.
The new, combined Standards were prepared by the Extinguisher Technical Harmonization Committees, which includes UL and ULC staff members and fire extinguisher manufacturers.
"The publication of these two binational Standards represents a significant step in UL's harmonization efforts with ULC," said Sonya Bird, Corporate Standards, Research Triangle Park, N.C., USA. "Although UL has published other binational Standards with another Canadian standards development organization, these are the first UL/ULC co-published Standards. This sets the stage for future binational Standards development between UL and ULC."

Interestingly, UL and ULC have joined forces. I wonder if there won't be an effort to get code writers to resolve some of the differences in Canadian and American codes. From what I've seen we've more in common than apart.
As to the Authorized Dealers suggestion, where would he find a list of Ademco-authorized anything? They don't authorize anyone in the US. Is Ademco different in this regard in Canada? Perhaps Ademco does authorize Canadian dealers but they don't do so in the US. Heck, look at some of the characters we all know who push Ademco. Heh, heh, heh. No offense to Robert Skinner in the above. I'm just not certain his suggestions are doable, at least with Ademco. Correct me if I'm wrong please. You were confused when you were created. In fact the doctor looked at your ass
