Novice here, so please bear with me.

I purchased a DSC Power832 (PC5010) with expander module, wireless
reciever (for those places _impossible_ to get wire to) and LED keypad.

My dealer was most helpful in getting me setup and teaching me how to
program it myself.

(I'm an electronics/computer guy, so having this neato electronic thing
and not having any knowledge of the "workings" was unnacceptable).

There's two things on my mind.

a. About once every three months, the system reports a tamper to the
monitoring station, which phones me, I tell them to ignore it, etc.

The panel, as best I can determine after punching in all the keys, never
tells me what caused the tamper, and indeed, never shows any sort fault
as having happened at all.

This leads me to ...

b. what do I have to buy to allow me to examine the programming and the
"reports" on a computer.

I think I need a PCLINK cable, which certainly looks like something I can wire
up in a minute, and I guess I need the DLS software, which I can purchase
from a few sites.

But do I need anything else ?

I suspect I need a PC5401 module, as I cannot think of where else to
connect a PCLINK cable to.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance

a pc link can be wired directly to the pc 5010

no need of a pc 5401..

But this can only be a temporary connection cause if the pc link is
connected this will prevent the transmission to the central of any code..

if you want to use this as a permanent connection you will need the pc5401..
in this case you will need to aply power to the pc5401 but dont connect the
combuss wire to it..(only the red and black)
then you put the provided wire between the pc 5010 and the pc5401 then
connect the serial cable of the computer to the serial connecteur of the
pc5401..

hope it helped..

Yup, I think so.

If I understand, the panel is programmed either to "speak" out its modem (to
the central monitoring station) or to speak out its serial port to a local
PC, but not both.

I have downloaded a copy of the DLS3 software, that explains how to program
the panel to speak out the serial port, but not documnet how to put it back !

Perhaps my installer can help .. or maybe I can figure it out from the
downloaded info.

Thanks again.

Alan, The PC5401 is not what you need. The PC5401 is for RS232
conection to other systems and controls. The DLS software conects to
the panel thru a modem. You will need to get the DLS software and the
proper Modem (which by the way is extremly slow, since the last time I
downloaded a panel) and downkoad the panel make any changes and upload
it back to the panel. The tamper could be from the wireless devices
cover or a number of other things, I don't think the download software
is going to be of any help but it sounds like you might have fun with
it. It is pretty cool software and the PC 832 is by far the best panel
on the market. If I can be of more assitance let me know.

A PCLINK should do what you need. There should be a 4-pin header on
the panel labeled something like "PC Link", usually it is slightly up
and to the left of center of the board.

You can make one in a few minutes-- the pinout is available. I seem to
remember a resistor being the only thing close to being an "odd" item.

Then you also need DLS.

Shouldn't need a 5401 unless you're doing some interesting stuff.

Interested.

Disable "general system tamper" reporting (location 338). This usually "cures"
the problem with version 2.0 boards.

Someone's already provided you the answer for the rest... :-))

For the sake of clarity (and to avoid a nasty surprise:)), you download *to*
the panel and upload *from* it. If you get the terminology wrong it's easy
to wipe out your programming.

That is correct. The PC-LINK9 and the software are cheap. I carry both in
my online store.

Many thanks to all who've helped. I think I've got it now.

I am VERY embarrassed to say that while I have been an EE for some
30 years now, I entirely missed the 4 pin PCLINK connector on
the panel ! Darkish closet, failing eyesight, evil shadow are my
excuses. <G>

I have one last question that I'm not clear on. The DLS3 docs
state that to communicate with the local computer via a PCLINK
cable, I enter

*8
installer code
499
installer code
499

and the panel should then communicate with the PC.

I assume this to mean that the panel is now using its serial port
instead of its modem to send info.

The question is, how do I "flip" the panel back, so that it is again
communicating by modem with the monitoring station ?

You see, the point of this exercise is not to do my own monitoring
nor is it to be able to watch things remotely.

I simply want to know how my panel is programmed, in every detail,
and get that to paper, and I don't want to do so by laboriously
pounding away on my LED keypad.

Thanks again.

Agreed.

That's one of the reasons why I want to get this PCLINK/DLS thing
working, to have a look at

a. the current programming (both for archive purposes and to understand
how the zillion settings might interact), and

b. the event buffer, to see if there's something in there that doesn't
show up with all my button presses

That's also why I'm interested in a PC5401, to log all events and maybe
make some sense from those.

(It is not, as my wife insists, just another toy. It is a serious
and necessary component of our overall security system. She should
believe _me_, and not her lying eyes !)

Sir, there is nothing special you need to do. By going into section 499 in
the sequence you describe, the panel will communicate via the PC link cable.
When you exit, it will always use the modem for outgoing communications with
the central station. There is nothing special you need to do.

However, in your software, you must default the laptop / software to the
option of using the PC Link cable instead of it looking for a modem
connection for the panel to go into PC Link communications mode. In other
words, you must force it to communicate through the PC Link connection.....

Installed (a) the engine ony, then (b) the products (and then of course SP1
and SP2).

and the 5010 is showing. But nope, the same error message. Tried the
autodetect, but that is where the error started!

Any other ideas anyone?

Thanks
Michael

HA! Finally got it working.

Seems that I made a bad choice when installing the software... I chose the
wrong country.

It would seem that the option are then dependant on the country chosen! So
much for the global village I suppose.

Cheers

Ok,
I realize this is a very old thread. However, I'll give it a try at least.

I'm looking for sw to program my DSC PC 5015 (Power 832) V 3.22 C. That i bought used and want to install in our house.

I'm however not that excited about doing all the programming using the keypad (not realizing how hard it would be to get hold of the sw for the computer.

Can anyone help me out??!

As far as i understand i need DLS 2002 + intl driver pack (cannot find) + driver for the PC 5015 (cannot find)

I will runt a PK5500 wired keypad so i guess these are the only drivers needed, right?

Can anyone help me get these drivers?

Problem not solved that link has a PC1864 and the forum points to installing DLS5 which isn't compatible with older 5010/5015's. For that he still requires DLS-2002

He's better off programming it from the keypad, it's a heck of a lot quicker
