I recently purchased a house that has an Ademco 6128 security system
installed. I do not want to have service from ADT or any other company, but
would like to use the system to monitor the doors, etc.

I have played around with it, not knowing what I'm doing I have set off the
alarm a couple of times. I was wondering if there is a way I can reset the
master passcode and setup the system to monitor the doors, etc, without
calling a security service?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Curtis

Pay a local service tech to reprogram it for you.

At the risk of getting some upset, playing around with an alarm system and
causing it to activate was a stupid thing to do unless you were absolutely sure
it wasn't connected to any communications path. Imagine, during your "fooling
around," you set off a duress alarm and had the police responding as if you
were in serious trouble. Reminds me of the guy who set off the hotel room
smoke detector just to see if it was a real detector.

Sure, very simple step. Just follow the instructions in the manual and use the
master code provided by the previous owner of the system. You did have the
system checked before closing on the home and you did mandate that all codes
and manuals be provided, didn't you? Yeah, I'm sure you did, otherwise that
would have been like buying the house without a home inspection and closing on
the house without the previous owner being required to give you keys to the
door locks.

You'll need the proper manual plus the dealer level programming access code.
6128 is a keypad model number. Look for a metal cabinet with the alarm's
electronics in inside. That is the master control panel. Get the panel
model and I'll give you the manuals.

Note: If the panel has been "locked out" by the alarm installer, a fairly
common practice among many alarm companies, you will not be able to program
it without knowing the code. If ADT installed it your chances of getting
that code are about as good as Kerry winning the endorsement of Fox Network.
:^)

The 6128 is the model # of your keypad, not the panel. It's also a "fixed
LCD" keypad and not the one you want to be programming with. If, for
instance, you were to call an ADT tech to reprogram it for you, that tech
would bring in a 6139 Alphanumeric keypad from his van to do it with.
Programming CAN be done with a 6128, but that's not the brightest thing in
the world to do since it doesn't give you feedback (i.e. easy to lose track
of WHERE you are in programming).

At MINIMUM, upgrade the keypad to a 6139 if you insist on going into
programming yourself. Easy to change out, just remove the face of the 6128
and unplug, then plug into the 6139 and snap it back on the same backplate.

#1 if you are not sure if it is hooked up to a central station
disconnect the phone line from the panel, that is if you dont want
monitoring. Monitoring is a good idea though like if you go out of
town, and it is good for monitoring the system itself, like low
batteries, logs of how many times a particular zone goes off, staff
opens and closes, etc. Otherwise you can always use a dialer device
like the AD-2000, but it sends a signal everytime the siren trips, and
does not identify each zone independently like a monitoring companies
hardware/software will. Up to you, i dont have either, just 4 loud
sirens.

Alarm systems do not require a genious to figure out, but you will
need a manual if you dont know the system. Programming can be done
easily with a 6128 on a Vista 10 (not others though), but if you dont
know the system, get hold of a Full English Keypad.

Also, 6128 is only the keypad, find out what the panel is first so you
get the right manual.

If you read the info in the manuals, you will notice the manufacturer
does most of the work for you, the rest is like ABC :-)

Even better would be to get your hands on Compass downloader software
& modem, for Windows GUI programming of the panel, it is even easier,
and less chance of keystroke programming errors, plus you will have a
copy of the panel programming incase you ever have to replace the
panel.
