Folks ..

Following a rennovation I noted that my contract or one of his trades
yanked out the Rj31X jack from the motherboard of the panel and all I
have is the bare wires. Rather than calling Brinks and paying for a
service call I would like to rewire the demark block and the Rj31X.

This panel features a line-in-use cutoff, so I imagine it is more than
just ring, tap and ground.

The Panel seems to be an Apex Panel OEMd to Brinks. Anyone have the
pinouts from the install manual for this Panel?

A few guys here understand Apex/Brinks boards, I don't. So what follows is
going to be kind of generic.

Hopefully there is a diagram inside your 'can' on the lid.
Hopefully the right four terminals will be marked T-1 R-1 Tip Ring or
some variation of this arrangement.
T-1 should be a brown wire
R-1 should be a gray wire
Tip should be green
Ring should be red

All these are AT the panel.

At the RJ block the wires coming from the demark should be:
Red to red (for example on the right side of the block, lower)
Green to green (left, lower)
((here's where some arguments begin))
I use yellow/white on the upper right terminal {these are hot/fire colors}
Black on the upper left {to me these are negative colors}

At the demark, grabbing the phone line coming to your house
your red wire is your Ring (+)
your green wire is your Tip (-)
This way it doesn't matter what color the phone company wires are, all you
care about is + and - (get a cheap meter $9)

this grabs the phone and shoots it to your RJ/ near the panel

The return wires from the RJ are their compliments- in my example the
yellow/white goes to the terminal in the demark you want to be Ring
the black wire goes to the terminal in the demark you want as Tip

These return wires become the phone system for your house on this number
only. Do NOT use a fax or computer line.

Hopefully this is clear. If not I'm sure there will be a follow on post
from someone. Be careful looking at pictures on the web referring to RJ
blocks as many of the pictures are incorrect and you will have communication
problems that seem unsolvable.

Here is a generic RJ-31X wiring diagram.

I hope it helps.

There are some alternate diagrams in the Basic Alarm Connection section.

No slam about someone breaking into the house next door now that they know
how the phone is wired? Jake I'm ashamed of you :)

What- for stating a fact- Bob La Londe's "STUFF" is good. They guy knows
far more than I and- and- and (did I say that?) is unpretentious!

Besides, he's a biker!

Bob's diagram is good. Here's another FAQ on the RJ-31X. Hopefully, the
reader will be able to make use of one or both.

Appreciate the sentiment. However, asking for the pinouts for an 8-pin
connector is not going to compromise the security world when if I wanted I
could go to the street side demark and yank all of my neighbors wires.

Thanks for all who helped -- I am now trying to locate a RJ-31X demark
block. I have an RJ45 block .. assume it is the same. ??

NO! An RJ-45 only looks like an RJ-31X. The RJ 31X has shorting bars
between pin 1 and 4 and between pin 5 and 8.

When you plug in the cord it presses the pins away from the shorting bars.
When you unplug the cord the pins snap back against the shorting bars and
reconnect the phone line to the premise phones.

This is a required wiring method so that an alarm panel can easily be
removed as a possible cause of noise or interrferrence on a phone line.
