I'd like the system to be silent including the entry/exit delay time
periods - everything except the keypad beeps you get when you press the
keys.
In the VISTA-50 installation docs (p.24) it says that the keypad device
"SOUND OPTION" can be set to "03" to suppress arm/disarm entry/exit and
chime mode beeps.
However, the suppression doesn't appear to work - I always get beeps on
those events regardless of how I program that option. (I have the keypad
set up as device "02" - Ademco doc says only that device "00" can't be
silenced.)
If nothing else, I'd at least like that "SOUND OPTION" to work. Still, I'd
also like to avoid the piezo beeper going off as the alarm itself too. Do I
have no other option than to physically modify the keypad by desoldering the
beeper and putting it on an SPST switch mounted through the keypad case?
(That's my last resort if it can't be done in programming.)
Thanks much for any help. (Please reply via e-mail as well.)

I had a client request the same thing a few years back. Only he wanted the
silent alarm to flash a small light next to his bed. He kept TWO loaded .44
magnums in his bedroom (one in each night table). This client also has a
federal license (tax stamp?) for fully automatic weapons. He owns quite a
collection, including an Uzi and a lot of other interesting stuff. I've
never seen so much firepower in private possession anywhere. Lord help the
thief that breaks into his condo.
We had to notify the police before hooking up the leased line that there was
a small arsenal inside. We also do backup digital monitoring of this
system. Whenever we call the police we read the warning screen from his
account: "Be advised there are loaded fully automatic weapons on premises,
as well as several thousand rounds of machine gun bullets." The dispatchers
really get nervous when they respond to that premises. I worry what will
happen if thieves ever get inside and reach his magazine, er closet, before
the cops arrive.

Good concept. I've done it with outside sirens. When no one's home, no
noise. Why bother the neighbors? Pretty cool when the cops show up and the
burglar's still inside. Even better with cameras in the house, I guess. When
your home you have all the noise and lights you want. Get creative with
schedules and events (fire, environmental etc.).
I'd rather have some kind of annunciation inside so they know they've
tripped an alarm and leave. That's kinda the whole point of the alarm.
Lotsa fun, those Vista 50's...

Nope, that cannot be changed, that was the one neat thing about Alarmlock
4700DL's (a carbon copy), you could reduce the time of chime (default was 1
second) until it "sounded" like it was lower however all you did was make it
chime quicker.
One alternative is to take the keypad apart (their rather easy) and put tape
over the piezo)
Now *that* gives me an idea...
Rather than desoldering the piezo beeper I'll just put a switch on the
keypad power. (Mount it in the side or bottom of the keypad.) Then there's
almost zero chance of me damaging the keypad too. So, when I come in to
disarm after being "armed-away" I'll just flip the keypad on and disarm.
Curious...
With your relay scheme how would you use the keypad to disarm the system?
You'd need to have the keypad power back on when the "start of entry time"
begins - which would defeat the whole purpose of cutting out the power
to silence it when a burglar comes in.
Maybe you meant that you'd have to have some other mechanism than that
keypad to disarm the system - like with a wireless button thingie.

Yup. I'm glad I chose it. It may seem like overkill but it's not much more
money than a VISTA-10, and you have so many more possibilities. (For me,
the X10 stuff was the compelling reason.)
Even from ADT I've seen quotes for less than $50 more to upgrade from a
VISTA-10 to a 50, and up the keypad to a 6139 (alpha keypad). As they
said, they can get creative on the pricing if you commit to a 3 year
contract.
On an outright sale, which I did (rather than committing to a monitoring
contract) it's still < $200 more. (This figure happens to jibe with mail
order Ademco prices that I've seen, so ADT seems to be pretty straight on
the upgrade costs. Their base costs for sensors are still high, but that's
for the labor, IMHO.)

Hmm, upon thinking I wonder if the 1555 with the 5508 keypad has the volume
also...

Thanks for the pointer. AFAIK, my keypad(s) presence is not monitored. For
instance, I can program the VISTA-50 for a non-existent second keypad and it
doesn't complain.
After I thought about it a bit more, I decided not to put a switch
on the keypad power because the Ademco 6139 has a programmable device id.
So, I assume after the power was gone for some time it'll forget it, and
I'll need to reset it after powering-up the keypad again.
To resolve this issue (and this thread) I just desoldered the beeper and
got the intended effect. (I will put a switch on it so that I can enable it
when I'm at home.)

Colin,
If the temple is Orthodox, it is essential that you also physically shunt
the door sensors so that there is no change in any electronic circuit or on
any display (even an unseen one) during Sabbath and Holy Days. We use a few
of the programmable relays (RB-3008) on the Napco Gemini and the Napco
MA-3000 systems to place the entire system in "Shabbos Mode" an hour before
sunset. We then set the system to restore power and zones after the service
is over on Friday evening. We wait for the detectors to stabilize after
reapplying power. Then we arm for the night. Saturday morning we repeat
the procedure after auto-disarming.
During the major Holy Days several times each year we set up a series of
special holiday schedules to comply with Shabbos/Yomtov rules so no one's
faith is offended. This has been one of the more challenging designs we've
done over the years. We protect two rather strictly Orthodox synagogues
(Young Israel) and numerous Orthodox homes in this manner. If you ever do
another system for an Orthodox home or synagogue, give me a call and I'll
share some of the techniques we've developed.
Regards,
Robert L Bass
