Does anyone happen to know where Ashintully Castle is? And perhaps any
history on it? I can't seem to find anything on it...

Taing,

ASHINTULLY CASTLE

Tucked away in the hills of Highland Perthshire, 400-year-old Ashintully
Castle is a unique and charming piece of Scottish history. Today it's the
family home of John and Carol Steel; John runs the 3,000-acre sheep farm and
sporting estate, Carol cooks deliciously and makes guests welcome in their
friendly, comfortable house.
Ashintully is roughly halfway between Braemar and Pitlochry. Royal Deeside
is within easy driving distance and so are the Central Highlands. Both areas
offer plenty of castles and National Trust properties, as well as golf
courses and other sporting activities. Ashintully itself has on all weather
tennis court and offers its guests lovely walks on the estate.

Pitlochry, only 16 miles away, is famous for its Summer Festival Theatre
which offers a season of comedies, dramas, etc, with a different production
on each night of the week.

I took the liberty to take this from the web site for the present day

It was built by the Spalding Family, about 400 years ago I believe.

"About 2 miles north east of Kirkmichael, on minor road north of
B950.......Ashintully Castle is a 16th century L-plan tower house of four
storeys and a garret to which a large wing was added in the 17th century.
It was remodelled in the 19th century. The walls are pierced by gunloops
and shot-holes. The parapet is dated 1583.........It was a property of the
Spaldings. In 1587 Andro Spalding was besieged in the castle and then badly
treated by a band os Stewarts and Blairs. The property passed to the
Rutherfords in 1750............The castle is haunted by the ghost of 'Green
Jean' who once held the castle in her own right. She was murdered, along
with her servant who was stuffed up the chimney, by her uncle so that the
castle and lands passed to him. Her ghost is seen at the family burial
ground and in the castle and two other ghosts are said to haunt the
grounds."

This is all extracted from Martin Coventry's excellent book "The Castles of
Scotland", a reference and gazatteer to more than 1700 castles - publisher
Goblinshead, Edinburgh, ISBN 1 899874 00 3. I'd heartily recommend it to
anyone interested in Scottish castles - it's paperback on not all that
expensive.

Excellent! I'll look for a copy.

....and I have to confess...I was reading some ghost stories, and came
across the one about "Green Jean"....that's what prompted this whole
thread. :P

Thanks for the help, David!
