A lot of the spelling variations are due to the fact that officials wrote
the name down as they heard it - a good illustration is the name Kemlo -
in NE Scotland, it's spelled with a "K", by the time you get south to
Angus and Fife, the same family appears as Gemlo, with a "G". The
Aberdeenshire/Kincardinshire accent is a bit different to the southern
one - the owner presumably _said_ "Kemlo" and the official _heard_
"Gemlo". On the other hand, the name may actually have been Robinson - it
is a name in its own right!

Just wondering.....I knew two brothers from Dunfermline by the name
of Gemmel(sp?) would this name be a derivitive of Kemlo/Gemlo perhaps??

Thanks

Ahh, but my question is, and has been, what clan do the Robinsons belong
to? I haven't had much luck tracking that name down at Scottish
gatherings I've attended.

It's not one I've come across, but I HAVE seen Kemley - not so far away.
I'd have to check Black's Surnames - some names look like variations on
the same theme, but are separate - others look very different until you
read them aloud (e.g. Gaurie, Gowrie).

I'd like to know the answer to that too. I have a family of Robinsons in
my line, way back, who came from Londonderry N. Ireland to Pennsylvania
around 1730. They were in N. Ireland for at least three generations and
there my information ends. I have a Scottish Clans Almanac which lists
Robinson as a sept name from Clan Gunn, but I know these "Sept" lists to
be highly generalized and inaccurate. I suspect that my Robinsons were
either lowland Scots or possibly of English origin. The reason I believe
they were most likely Scots is because I know they were Presbyterians and
they married into a family that came from Scotland (Glascow) to America
(named Boyle).

Where did you get your information?
