Chart Success for Highland Cathedral?
In the 1970s, the pipe band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards made it to
the top of the hit parade for seven weeks with "Amazing Grace" and sold 14
million copies world-wide. Now they hope to do it again with the lament
"Highland Cathedral" - which was chosen by Madonna as a wedding march at
Skibo Castle last December. The tune features on the regiment's pipes and
drums album "Highland Cathedral" as it is one of the pieces most requested
by audiences. The pipe-tune, amazingly, was written by two Germans, Uli
Roever and Michael Korb. The words and music are intended to emphasise the
feeling of a National Anthem. The story goes that, under the reign of King
James I of Scotland, all clan chiefs were asked to meet in a secret place,
the Highland Cathedral, to pledge an ending to their constant feuding, and
live in peace. This they did and peace reigned but, alas, only for as long
as the king lived. The tune has words by Ben Kelly who was inspired after
hearing the pipe-tune. You can hear part of it being sung by the Phoenix
Choir at http://www.phoenixchoir.org/records/c-xmas.htm

The download takes a few minutes but it is a real recording and is
well worth it.

And if you didn't understand the lyrics, or if you wish to sing along:

Highland Cathedral

Land of my fathers, we will always be
Faithful and loyal to our country.
In times of danger, we will set you free.
Lead you to glory and to victory.

Hail, Caledonia, to our ancient prayer.
In this Highland Cathedral, let our standards bear.
Joining together with one dream to share.
God bless the people of this land do fair.

Gone is the past, let us start anew.
Let this hope of peace always remain.
Spirit of Scotia, be strong and true.
Then your children will smile again.

Rise Caledonia, let your voices ring
In this Highland Cathedral of God and King.
Whom, joy and liberty, to all, will bring.
Come, let your heart, with love and courage, sing.

Lonely the exile o'er distant seas,
The home of their birth, gone from their eyes.
Bring back their souls o'er the ocean breeze
To the land where their fathers lie.

Rise Caledonia......

I very much appreciate that you have supplied these lyrics to this
wonderful music. I am often reminded when I hear these beautiful
songs and their marvellous lyrics how great an honour and a privilege
it is to be a Scot in any part of this planet.

Certainly, from my own small corner of Scotland, reaching out over
all of the world and having the capability of contacting all who love
our country is a great consolation to me.

These tunes are of the very essence of the Scot and are integral with
our culture. To those who have found it, perhaps for the first time,
we bid you welcome to Scotland.

Thanks, and it's a nice tune too. One of the first I learned on the pipes.
I play it a lot because I like it.

And its usually played at the annual Kirking of the Tartan in the National
Cathedral, Washington DC. While I take a somewhat skeptical view to kirkings,
that one gives even myself a shiver.
