OFFICIAL NAME
Clan Scott Society, Inc. (Previously known as Clan Scott, U.S.A. and
Clan Scott Society of the Americas)

CLAN OBJECTIVES
To associate together those bearers of the surname Scott and sept
members, for the purpose of a society with common interest in the study
of the history, culture, and genealogy of the name Scott; to provide, by
virtue of such study, a basis for pride in past accomplishments under
the name Scott, in such field as the Corpus Scoti or the general Clan
membership may from time to time institute; to give impetus to the
reputation and accomplishments of the Clan by appearances, both public
and private, bearing on the Scott history and its relationship to the
history of the Scottish people and their descendants in the Americas.

WHO CAN JOIN?
Any person meeting the following requirements:
• A regular member shall be eighteen years or older;
• Shall bear the surname Scott, or one of the following septs, however
spelled:
Buccleuch, Geddes*, Harden, Laidlaw, Langlands, Napier* or a name
originating from Roxburghshire or the eastern Borders of Scotland; or
• Be directly connected by descent or marriage to such a name.
• Although Clan Scott is based in the USA, members may reside anywhere
in the world.

Spouse and unmarried children under the age of 18 automatically become
members.

* Other organizations exist for these surnames. We encourage membership
in those organizations but will accept members these lineages.

COST TO JOIN
Various categories of membership are available. Costs reflect 1999
rates and are subject to change after September 1999. Dues are payable
on a calendar year basis with no proration. However, those joining
after September 1st receive paid-up membership through December of the
following calendar year.

Regular Membership $25*
Associate Membership $25*
Life Membership $300-400 depending on age*

* Includes one-time $5 initiation fee; dues are payable in US dollars.

HOW DUES ARE USED
As a not-for-profit Pennsylvania corporation established in 1978, all
monies go toward the objectives of the Society. All officers serve
without compensation. The activities we support include:

• Sponsorship of and participation in various Scottish festivals and
Highland games throughout the United States;
• Publication of the Clan quarterly newsletter, the Stag & Thistle;
• Awarding various trophies at games and scholarships to encourage
perpetuation of Scottish traditions and cultural arts;
• Sponsorship of SCOTT genealogical email distribution list through the
Rootsweb Genealogical Cooperative;
• Sponsorship of Ellen Payne Odem Library's Family Tree genealogical
newsletter.

GENEALOGY
Clan Scott has volunteer genealogists, one of whom publishes an
independent genealogical quarterly. Membership does not include a
subscription to the publication. Inquiries should be sent directly to

WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
Clan Scott will send you an attractive membership certificate, suitable
for framing, when your membership is processed. You have the
opportunity to join others in celebrating your Scottish heritage,
customs and culture; to learn more together; to be part of an
organization which joins other Societies in sponsoring Scottish
activities around the country. As a member, you will receive the Clan's
quarterly newsletter, the Stag & Thistle, full of entertaining and
educational articles to keep you informed of Clan activities. Members
are encouraged to contribute articles and comments. Members with
Internet email addresses will automatically be subscribed to the Clan's
exclusive email distribution list for Clan communications and news. The
Clan has volunteer genealogists who can help you in your family
research. A system of commissioners across the country will keep you up
to date on local and national activities. The Clan's Storekeeper has
various Clan Scott promotional items such as badges, pins, and T-shirts
with the Scott emblems available for purchase.

MEETINGS
Informal meetings are held at the Clan Tent at various games, festivals,
and gatherings as sponsored by the area Commissioner. A larger and more
formal Annual General Meeting, held for business purposes, is held at a
different festival or gathering each year, rotating the meeting
geographically throughout the USA. Additionally, our online members
have the opportunity to converse with other online members through our
exclusive email distribution list and participate in chats in our
private America Online chat room.
