Did the Orkney Islands have clans like the mainland of Scotland? I'm looking
for the Halcrow name who came to Canada at the beginning of the 1800's to
build the boats for the Hudson Bay Company to travel and trade for furs with
the natives. The Orkney men are well published in Canada, but it seems to lag
off when I search for their names in the Orkney Islands.
Thankyou, Kimberly Bird of Halcrow descent.

Dear Kimberly,
As a Halcrow myself I have never been aware of a clan related to my
name.
I was always told as by my parents and grandparents that I should take
the clan of my grandmother (McLeod) as there was no clan for Halcrow. I
was under the impression that clans tended to come from the Scottish
mainland or the west coast islands off Scotland. Maybe this has somthing
to do with Shetland (where I am decended from) and Orkney being so close
to Orkney. The name Halcrow is of Norwegian (Viking?) origin and not
really of Scottish origin. However I would be extreamly interested if
your research turns up any other information.
My e-mail address is hal...@cableinet.co.uk
and I live in Edinburgh in Scotland.
Good luck with your research.
