I just ordered and received my backrest for my 1999 Honda Helix. and its
gray!
My seat is black. The guy at the parts desk at the Honda dealer says its the
only color. Is he bull shitting me? Does Honda make a black backrest? I know
the seat was gray in the 80s, but its black now.

If not, anyone had any luck painting or recovering this $150.00 backrest.

Help

My friend has a 99 Helix, and when he got his backrest it was gray also. He
had them re-order it, and has a black one now. They DEFINITELY make a black
one!

Yes, the pillion backrest.. .I think (I learned a new word today).
Its the genuine Honda passenger backrest.

pillion (pîl´yen) noun
1. A pad or cushion for an extra rider behind the saddle on a horse or
motorcycle.
2. A bicycle or motorcycle saddle.
[Probably from Scottish Gaelic pillean, diminutive of peall, rug and or
Irish Gaelic pillín, diminutive of pell, rug, both from Old Irish pell, from
Latin pellis, animal skin.]

Tsk. Imagination, imagination. Having a fey sense of humor, spouse rather
enjoys the Marvin the Martian seat cover I made for his Helix. Right now I'm
looking for Meerkat graphics to create a flag for mine.

But, to the subject at hand ......... $150. For a backrest. Ick. I've seen
pictures and just can't see putting out that much money (knowing that I'll
now get testimonials from users who say it is worth it). That being said,
are there any tips for home-made backrests? I wear a back brace under my
riding overalls -- does quite well at keeping me from slouching in the seat
and rolling back on my tailbone on a longride, but is a bit cumbersome
during, erm, pit stops.

Another place to check for backrests is Utopia Products (in Akron, OH)
http://www.utpr.com/
Check out their site - pretty good. I have yet to get a bvackrest from them,
as I don't scoot all that much anyway here in eastern Ohio.

I purchased the Utopia backrest about 3-weeks ago. Have ridden 600 miles
with it. Absolutely love it!

I Just ordered the Utopia backrest. A few questions:

How did the install go?

Can a passenger still fit with it on?

Was it scary cutting the seat?

Awful good questions Dan. The install wasn't exactly easy. Yes, cutting
the new seat upholstery wasn't something you naturally felt like doing.
After making the incision, your supposed to cut down through the foam
padding - down to the plastic base. Then, you insert an "L" shaped piece
[short leg of 'L' first] and then you 'straighten' it out when your 'under'
the foam and next to the plastic base. Far easier said than done. Then you
insert two cap screws through the plastic base into two threaded holes in
the short 'L' leg. Wow! After one hour of trying, I went to the hardware
store and purchased two cap screws at least an inch longer than those
provided. I managed to get one log bolt started. Then, it was a piece of
cake. Two tricks here: [first] Make sure you get the 'L' shaped piece all
the way down through the foam; [second] Buy one longer cap screw to use as
a 'starter.'

Can a passenger fit behind the back rest? Yes, a very skinny person.
Honestly, it looks like a very narrow space. I installed a Givi top case -
so the space looks even skinnier.

Would I do it again? In a heart beat. That back rest is fantastic! If I
wanted to carry a passenger? I don't know.

Thanks for the quick and detailed response.
When things get hairy Its good to know it can be done and its worth it.
I also purchased the quick release option so I guess I can just remove it
and put it in the trunk if I have a passenger. Did you buy this option?

No [not having a passenger at this time], I didn't buy that option.
