I keep reading all the Zuma posts about fighting to get just 40mph.
Most of the scooters I've dealt with from Hyosung and Kymco will do
between 42-51mph without having to spend purchase any additional parts.
I guess part of it is the gearing since I know the Yamaha Zuma can
accellerate like a bat out of hell! Any thoughts?

Yes this also surprised me. People spend a fortune on the yamaha and still
only get 40 mph and my totally standard derestricted peugeot speedfight does
53 on the flat and has hit 72 when wind, hill and truck assisted!

Hi Martin!
I have a 50 cc Kymco Fever -00. It's a 2-stroke. Is the People a 4-stroke
or a 2-stroke? And does it have a Variomatic tranny?
At the moment my Fever is doing 35 at the most. What are your
recommendated alterations for getting to the roaring 50-ies?

The 3 Kymco models we have this year are all 2-stroke, 50cc, with
variomatic(CVT) transmissions. The unrestricted speed varies from 42-51mph,
depending on the model. Our bigger 125-250cc 4 strokes will arrive next year
in the US.
I've seen 2 types of restrictors on our models, exhaust and transmission.
They usually have both. The exhaust restrictor typically just slows down the
accelleration, but you should pull off your exhaust pipe and look to see if
there is a washer that has been tack welded on at the mouth of the muffler.
The transmission spacer restricts the top speed to 30mph or so. All of our
models have this. You'll need an impact wrench and a replacement spacer that
does not have a limiter on it. It only takes about 15 minutes to change
it(1hr if it is your first time). Just remove the transmission cover(you
don't usually need to take the kickstarter off), remove the bolt on the front
variator with an impact wrench, remove the outer pulley(it just slides
off),pull the belt off, hold the inner pully(so the roller bearings don't
fall out), pull out the spacer and replace it with the unrestricted spacer.
Reinstall everything. It's really much simpler than it sounds. Even if you
mess up and the the inner pully roller bearings fall out, you just put the
roller bearings back in place and reinstall it. It's just annoying, but not
any big deal. If your local dealer doesn't have the derestricted spacer, you
can take your spacer to anyone with a lathe(a machine/engine shop), and ask
them to take the lip off the existing spacer.
I've seen one model of Kymco that has an electronic restrictor. If the two I
mentioned aren't the problem, check your CDI. If it has a wire that just
loops back into itself, that may be restrictor. Or it could have some other
type of electronic CDI restrictor. I'd check with your dealer before cutting
any wires though.
The transmission restrictor removal will let you go much faster, the exhaust
restrictor removal with dramatically improve your acceleration. The bikes
just fly!
Hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out!
