Still researching..................thinking twice about the 50cc
chinese scooter route.

the 125cc chinese scooters lack the retro look of the 50cc ones. Seems
only the Yamaha offers more power in the retro-style. of course the
price is alot higher (twice).

OK question - Engine break in. One says baby it, the other says go all
out.

WTF? - who is full of it and who is correct?

thanks for any wisdom!

Proper break in is as follows. Start the bike and let it warm up just
a minute or so. Start out by accelerating at around 1/4 throttle for
about 4 seconds, then decelerate at part throttle taking about 8
seconds to come back to a slow putt. Do that a few times. Then
accelerate at about 1/3 throttle for 4 sec. then decelerate for about
8, doing this a few times. Finally accelerate at about 1/2 throttle to
cruise speed taking around 8 seconds, (semi briskly) decelerate for
about 10-15 seconds. Do that a few times. The "deceleration mode" will
seem like it takes a long time, but do it right.

The idea here is to "heat cycle" the engine without overstressing it.
This will seat the rings.

Now go ride, but take it easy, don't get crazy. Don't go to WOT for at
least an hour of riding.

Make sure when you are riding, you vary the throttle and don't just
ride for long periods at one steady speed.

Change appropriat oil(s) as the manual suggests.

I have owned a 2005 Yamaha Vino 125 for 19 months. I put 2200 miles on
it and it has run fine. I do not baby it nor beat it. I seldom go over
45 mph - use it almost exclusively in town. I did make one 120 mile trip
holding it almost flat out at 50+ miles per hour.

I just hop on the bike and use it.

I bought this unit for $2600 including tax and tag. I took it back for
the 600 miles service which cost $170. I have changed my oil - checked
the tires myself since.

The bike performs flawlessly. I am 58 and my wife is 51. She enjoys
driving it to campus because it is great for parking.

The Vino 125 has the Euro look. I live in Florida and use it all year
around. I keep it in my garage. In the morning on cold days I run it a
bit before I take off.

doesnt matter, as long as you keep the oil changed religiously.

the breakin for my burgman400 called for revs not to exceed the
equivalent of 35mph for something like 600 or 1000 miles.

riiiight... i had to take the freeway from the dealership to get home,
so THAT was out of the question. 13000 miles later, no problems.

but i did do the oil changes, and checked the valve clearance at 4000 miles.

most people dont beat on their scoots anyway, so riding normal, checking
and changing oil when necessary seems most prudent.

.......................................................................

Yeah, with a four stroke, but a 2 stroke needs an enriched premix for the
first 5-600 miles,
and a restrained hand on the throttle as well.

thanks!!

when you say full throttle - we are talking 5-minute spurts?

I'm already backsliding in the not made in China department. just ran
across a new retro-125cc for 800 bucks
1/3 the cost of a Yamaha and 1/4 that of a Vespa.

China = crap, but for that kind of money it may not be crap ;-/.

In 1999,I put a new rebuilt 318 cubic inch short block engine in my 1978
Dodge van.To break in the engine, (with rebuilt cylinder heads) I got my
van out on a back road and I gunned it wide open a few times. In between
running the engine wide open,I stomped the brake pedal.Dont forget, new
brakes need to be broke in properly too.

Where are you going to get parts and service for that Chinese no-name
Scooter? I have had some ''experience'' with Chinese gals when I was in
Asia in 1964.Whoops,that's a whole nother story entirely. <grin>

http://www.worldwidedistributing.com/Retro%20125%20Model.htm

have no idea if they are legit. good price. good warrentee. claim to
have parts (any of it true? who knows...........I'd have to find
someone who has dealt with them to verify, otherwise just roll the
dice).

at 1/4th the cost of a Vespa and 1/2 that of a Yamaha, even if it is a
POS (which it may or may not be............is it twice as bad?)

I suspect.

1. chinese crap is better than it was only 2-yrs ago.
2. these things are so cheap - not due to shittyness but to 3-rd world
labor costs.
3. Vespas/etc. slap a few hundred/thousand on their scooters just for
the Label (status).
4. no real dealer service

however I cannot verify any of this.

- the Diamo Retro-150, Verucci Retro-150 and Geely-X-8 all share the
same body.................I'm sure that they also share alot of the
same parts. Exactly which ones and which ones differ I could only find
out by trolling Yahoo User Groups.

the shitty Pep Boys Pantera scooters have volumes on repairs and parts
via these user groups, as does "Lee" WRT Geelys (also has his one
website/BBS www.scootdawg.com (which I posted a related question
yesterday), Tank also has a very active yahoo user group.

one reason these scoots are so cheap is they are without dealer service
- you are on your own in fixing and diagnosing and find parts (I'm not
so sure the utter crap argument is still valid as to why they are so
cheap).

this is the trend of everything.........from self-serve gas, to
self-bagging at the store.

I don't have alot of money and I do not take kindly to shelling out an
extra grand for a name-plate when a generic will do. of course I buy
store brand food and coffee instead of name brand.

I'm cheap, but also poor. only not as poor as I would be if I spent
friviliously.

Respectfully,I advise you spend more money in the short run and buy a
good second hand or new Honda or Yamaha or Suzuki Motor Scooter and that
would save you a lot of money and headaches (Good grief,Charley Brown)
in the long run. There are some people whom have been that route before
and they surely know.

"scoot" magazine has their 2006 buyers guide, with ONLY street legal,
regulation compliant models listed. its definately worth a purchase, if
you have a tower records, or some place with a BIG magazine section.
best $6 youll ever spend.

the ONLY manufacturers listed are:

aprilia
bajaj
baron
daelim
genuine (stella)
honda
kymco
LS motorsports
PGO
piaggio
suzuki
TN'G
vespa
vectrix (electric maxi-scoot!)
vento

if you pick something NOT on this list... caveat emptor.

theres no guarantee itll be legal to ride on public roads, and chances
are you wont be able to register or insure it, DESPITE what
"worldwidedistributing" tells you. once they have your money, theyll
likely "forget" who you are.

the cheapest ones listed, by MSRP, are:

vento zip r3i 50cc, $1399
daelim cordi 50, $1450
kymco agility 50, $1599
LS motorsports aero GTX 50, $1695
TN'G venice 50, $1695

your call. their claims of sending an "MSO" sometime after the scooter
has shipped seems kinda bogus.

if you want to call their bluff, call and ask for a VIN so you can give
it to your local DMV and insurance company to check on registering and
insuring it.

if they wont give you a VIN, theyre full of shit and have something to
hide. mainly, the fact that theyre selling junk thats not legal to be on
public roads.

and if they do give you a VIN, call your DMV and insurance and check.
unless you want something to putt around on in your driveway.

if you cant register and insure it, its not JUST crap, its useless.

if it gets stolen, youre SOL. if you hit a car or pedestrian? congrats!

youre riding an unregistered and unlicensed vehicle! that means you get
fined, whats left of it gets impounded, and the other driver or
pedestrian gets to sue you for riding something unfit for travel on
public roads.

get back to us on that VIN question... im tempted to call myself.

theyre CHEAP because they havent undergone the testing and certification
that the other LEGAL scooter companies have gone through. sorry to yell,
but if its not on the list i posted earlier, its likely not LEGAL.

even shite companies like "baron" have had to spend many thousands of
dollars to ensure their vehicles are legal for use on public roads.

youd be just as well off riding a 70's style minibike with a briggs and
stratton engine around on public streets. see how far you get before the
cops stop you. chances are the B&S would be more reliable :) i had one
when i was a kid, and it was a blast.

if you live in some backwoods hole that you can get away with doing it,
go ahead. youll be $$$ ahead of the game. just dont have an accident
with anyone else!

you cant lump vespas in with "etc".

you can verify the VIN. if theyre afraid to give you a VIN to run,
theyre hiding something.

Sunnyvale. yep.

Marriot's Great America still open?

Santa Clara bought it yes?

used to fire off fireworks every night the first year they opened - dad
lived only a block away.

Agnew still around? - cute town..........what was that town up by
Milpetus? - was that Agnew? or another? or the original Milpetus?
(older - built with cheap 40's houses and in a swamp - bet. the new
Milpetus to the East and Moffet Field to the West.

I think Agnew was south of this town and next to
SantaClara.........been awhile. forget.

Half Moon Bay is a kewl town.........out West.

Those little Briggs & Stratton engines are intended for small, slow
moving thingys. My lawn mower that I push around on my yard has a 3.75
horse power Briggs & Stratton engine on it.I wouldn't even think about
building a serious Motor Scooter with such a small horse power rating.

Now,my twin cylinder 12 horse power Briggs & Stratton engine would be a
good choice for me to use if I decide to build my own two or three
wheeler Scooter.(and parts are available all over U.S.A.) How much horse
power and torque does your Motor Scooter have? Boat wheels,I am not
limited to boat wheels, there are many other choices I have.V belt drive
transmission,I can find a small three or four speed standard shift
transmission in most any of the auto junk yards around here.

Whatever,if I decide to build my own two wheeler,it will be along the
lines of the old Harley Davidson Topper Motor Scooters. It would be a big
two wheeler too.

It sure would be a shame if people who build their own cars and boats
and airplanes and two and three wheelers can't get them street legal and
licensed and insured to ride on the public streets and highways.Jesse
James and all of those other guys would have to close down their shops
and go out of business.Almost every vehicle we see, they first started
out in history as being home made by somebody.

How would I check? - goto DMV and have them check the database for
Roketa?.................seems i read a post about this. that the DMV
does not have companys like Tank/Roketa/etc..... in their database due
to their newness on the american shore.

Gy6 - seems they had the license agreement with Honda in the 70's which
has expired (of course the Chinese simply ignore that legality and
continue to produce them without Hondas permission).

I think recently Honda gave up and is now in partnership with some
Chinese makers - so as to at least make a little cash since they lack
the power to stop Gy6 engine pirate production.

- not sure on the details, murky. i think the above is at least a
little correct.

Here is Florida it is much simpler to register a car or scooter. I would
expect that a home built would not be a problem (I see a lots of
vehicles around here that look like home builts :-) They do not have
state inspections for safety equipment or emissions. Since the state has
no mountains and strong westerly wind currents - any smog is blown
harmlessly out to the Atlantic. Having moved from Pennsylvania where you
had to have two inspection stickers a year and very strict registration
requirements - it was refreshing dealing with the DMV here. When you
sell a car to someone - you can just sign the title and hand it to them
- DMV takes care of everything. Also - there are tag and title stores
all over the place - you just walk in - fill out the forms - and walk
out with your license plate. By the way - Florida has a choice of 90
different license plates - when you go to DMV - they are all on the wall
and you choose which one you want.

If one were home building a scooter - and this would be illegal and
wrong - one might go to a junk yard - buy a junked scooter - maybe find
one in the newspaper - use some of the parts - especially the part with
the registration number attached.

Home built planes - scooters - trucks - car - tractors - are so
American. We are adventurous folks - we should encourage original
thought.

I own a Vino 125 - and find it to be a great compromise scooter. It has
excellent brakes fro hauling two people - enough power to get around
town. It rides smoothly and quietly. I would prefer a real electric
scooter - but the Yamaha dealer is right around the corner. My wife
rides it to work in her business suit because parking on campus is at a
premium. It is easy to park with its side stand - it starts easily - no
surprises.

When I was buying a scooter I was smitten with a Vespa ET4 - but $4700
versus $2600 was an easy choice. I only put about 1000 miles a year on a
scooter - and that little amount of riding could not justify the extra
cash. Also the closest Vespa shp was 200 miles away and the Yamaha shop
is 2 blocks away.

I know a guy who lives in Pennsylvania,(Penns Woods) he is a computer
expert with over forty years in the field of computers and computer
technology. He has told me before how strict Pennsylvania is about
Automobiles.I guess the same thing goes for two wheelers too.It isn't
anywhere near that tough here in the State (State of Confusion) I live
in.

Marriots opened in 74? - I was there in 75 and remember the fireworks -
30 minutes 7-days a week for that year. must have been expensive.

Agnew is litterally 1 or 2-miles east of Marriots........i think
legally it is now Santa Clara - though in the 40's it was its own town
(some older building there - tiny, 2 or 3 blocks in size.

a lot of that is just kickbacks to the auto repair industry, like the
"headlight adjustment" in new york. especially with todays aero styled
headlights, they dont go out of adjustment unless the cars been wrecked.

then its gonna be a bitch. anything legal and compliant with current
regs is going to be in there. for the suzki burgman, (JS1CK...)

J stands for japan (country of origin)
S is for suzuki...

so what would a chinese VIN look like? no idea. but it needs a VIN in

You can choose a county plate - we did. Our county is Leon county as in
"Ponce de Leon." You can also chose the generic Florida plate - or a
tons of other ones. The college plates are popular - as are the manatee
ones - and the pro team plates.

I don't think so.

As a subsidiary of Piaggio, Derbi is dependant on Piaggios strategy, which
as it refers to the US at the moment, opaque to say the least.

Maybe is IS all about the weakend US dollar.

Some Reasons:

Q)Lack of credibility of manufactures.

China 97/Taiwan/China/Beijing//North Korea ,revolutions are starting as the
people start to remember/discover the *Tank Man* and now they even have Hells
Angels up there. So I don't rely on them too much.
They are too busy fighting the Guv't to be efficient at their $600 a month, 12
hr. day jobs, militaristic *Child Labor* concepts.

Taiwan/China/Beijing//North Korea was my last import purchase of parts, and were
they ever mickey moused....but the price was right..

Q)Lack of source/parts/service.

They all wanna paint it black and sell it fast, with a very good match to the
original dyes they purchased from the larger **Scooter** companies......
What this develops into, is a some "burry" parts that need extra work, and
altogether there is a lack of Follow-Up *Continuity* of specified lines...hell
they are all mostly throw aways.....leaving the American Importer (garage tree
mechanics totally disinterested)
Bur if your mechanically inclined and most importantly have a place to work,
then the *Chinese Scooter* idea may not be such a problem as it would be to less
fortunate people.

Q)Red Tapes from customs.

Hell they're worst than the Jap invaders, with all these make work for
recumbents all over...worst, they hire incompetence to slow the pace down to
Months and Years. Call US/Canada Customs or email, they know nothing of each
other, and usually never reply...leading to endless witch hunts, and are almost
a full time job...for the big (Pony Express) mix-ups.

The best scooters are the ones with local dealers like Yamaha/Honda dealers,
that have at least some history which leads to some interchangeability and
continuity of parts...there really is no other relaxed answer.

Most name *brand scooters* are from all parts of the Asian world and France, for
example the Yamaha Majesty 400cc is Designed/Assembled in MBK (Motobecane)
France but all the parts are made in Japan and it's puppet countries as well.

If I was buying a smaller scooter like 50cc, I would look at MBK/Yamaha since
they have been in the scooter construction for over 30 years.

A name brand will give you reliability, but in a big case, they also have the
biggest lawyers, to jerk your chain than the smaller companies can readily
afford.

Larger *Name Brand* Companies have a _rePUtation_ to uphold and like to keep
their scooter mistakes with large payoffs or the best reliability to the
American customer.....

After they had won their confidence in Europe, they now treat Europeans like
*poop* as compared to here.......so beware of these eminent Jap tactics.

I tried to get a Chinese Helix -$1,500.00 from the states when I had the cash,
but they never answered my email....since the US has an embargo on China
Imports, I thought they http://www.ibacycles.com/scooters.html would be glad to
get rid of them in Canada with the $250.00 mph/km metric converter.

But then there's warranty stuff and more paperwork in all these money laundering
business'......

think of your motor being an athelete in training. Start out easy Lower
loads, lower rpm vary throttle inputs, after a couple of hours operation,
start loading the motor (accelerating a bit harder, go up some hills) vary
throttle inputs a bit more but no sustained high rpm operation. Next short
bursts of full throttle acceleration climbing to short periods of full
throttle sustained operation working to longer sustained full throttle as
you feel it loosening up. Been doing it this way for 0ver 30 yrs (racing
engines are different of course)

The yamaha is going to be a product worlds better in quality. I looked at a
new vino at the local yamaha shop last week and the fit and finish is
absoluely startling (Know that i am a sportbike guy and not a scooter
enthusiast per se, but the fit and finsh on the new yamhas is really very
nice.) You certainly wont go wrong with the yammie and will get a real
dealer network, but the price is kinda high. You can get a brand new
kawasaki 250cc ninja (or zzr250 depending on where you live) which is a real
motorcycle and a real little jewel, for about the same amount, or a 2 or 3
year old 750 cc.
