The Kymco we've imported are directly from Taiwan, therefore it has no
restriction on exhaust. The top speed on a 50cc cobra (stock) is 80km/h
(50mph) level road. The top speed for 100cc cobra (stock) is 102 km/h
(64mph) level road. ( I passed a Porsche 911 this morning going down hill,
the Porsche driver was shock that my little 100cc scooter was going so fast
:) )
The torque on 100cc and 50cc is about the same. There is little exterior
difference between the 100cc and 50cc cobra. But on the road you will feel
the difference. 100cc gives you that extra get away acceleration.
suspension on the 50cc is the same as the 100cc I would have expect to get a
better shock but it feels the same. But there is a big difference on the gas
mileage between the 50cc and 100cc. I can only get 30 miles per tank on the
100cc, but I can get about 45 miles on 50cc. Is everyone getting the same
gas mileage? or I am off?
overall, I still think that a 100cc is much better than the 50cc, with the
extra speed, you can easily get out of harms way if need with a 100cc. I
will be testing the Yamaha BWS (Zuma) next month, both the 100cc and the
50cc and I will share with you all

How small is the tank on those things or are they only doing about 15mpg?
30 miles on a tank?
I get 110 miles from my runner 125 on 80% of a tank.

George, as for your gas mileage, you should be getting 80mpg under normal use on
the 50cc Cobra. If you de-restrict it, you may lose 10-20mpg if you drive it at
top speed constantly, but 15-20mpg is virtually impossible without a hole in
your tank. The worst I've ever heard of is 30-40mpg on a fully kitted Cobra
with the 70cc bore kit that was driven extremely hard. The cruising range on a
stock 50cc Cobra should be 80-100 miles since it has a 1.3-1.5 gallon tank.
I've noticed that most scooter tanks in the US are setup to give about a 100
mile cruising range. Those that get better gas mileage have smaller tanks, and
vise verse.
I would expect to get poor gas mileage on the 100cc Cobra because it is a
2stroke. It is make for pure speed, light weight, and high revving, not for
good gas mileage and lower emmissions like the 4strokes. Otherwise, they'd just
put a 4stroke on it if they wanted practicality and long durability. However,
not as low as you reported. My guess, and this is just a guess, would be
50-60mpg on the 100cc.
As for street legal. I'm not sure about the "grey market" rules of getting a
scooter registered, but I do know the 100cc Cobra is not DOT and EPA approved in
the US. This means there is probably no product liability insurance for the
bikes should someone get killed due to a defective bike. But, at that low of a
price, some may feel it is worth the risk. George, I wish you well in your
endeavor to bring in the "fun" bikes from overseas, but beware the EPA and DOT
police! I've heard they crack down VERY hard at non-approved bikes at the Indy
Cycle shows. I'm sure that the US KYMCO and Yamaha distributors will probably
be giving them a call if they find out you are bringing them into the US. I
know KYMCO has a clause that a dealer/distributor cannot knowingly sell scooters
to a non-authorized reseller. EG I cannot sell 20 KYMCO Cobras at a discount to
someone who is going to sell them at the Flea Market in one of my competitor's
territories. This basically undermines the dealer franchise territory rights
and would give the distributor grounds to yank my dealership contract with
them. So, whoever you are getting your bikes from may be at risk for losing
their contract to sell KYMCOs.
But, if it is legal, I'd like to get a few KYMCO 100cc motors for racing
purposes. Are you able to import them for me?? If so, let me know. I've been
trying to get them for several months from the distributor, but I haven't seen
them yet.
