Hi,

I just bought this, it's a great little machine.

anyone know the top speed on it? going uphill?

i will jazz it up a bit witrh some parts mid-summer. though and let you all
know how it goes

i bought it for my girlfriend, but have a feeling i'll be logging a lot of
miles on it myself until i get my motorcycle.

i have some questions for you though:

parking suggestions? use a car spot or what?

theft safety/prevention suggestions?

does yamaha have saddlebags or a basket for the groceries that mounts on it?

thank you all, you're a great crowd.

Hello,I also recently purchased a new Vino (black) almost three weeks
ago.My top speeds are as follows about 33-35mph on level ground, about
22-28mph uphill,dependant on incline,and about 40 downhill.As to parking
I use bicycle racks or lightposts or other semi-permanent objects to
attache it to with cable lock as well as locking steering,I put cable
thru back rim since its harder to remove.I keep it locked in garage at
night and bring it into my place of employment in the day.Yamaha does
sell (some) accessories check on webpage under Riva accessories,I found
a nice black bag at a bicycle shop, but under-seat storage is very handy
as well....W

Willie, I removed the restricter from my exhaust pipe and was shocked at the
power that my new vino has. That combined with removing the washer from the
transmission gives me around 35mph uphill, 38-42mph level and 47mph
downhill. With a little tug on the handlebars while around 10 mph I can do a
full on wheelie. I'm also around 230 pounds and I can't imagine what it
would do if I was at 140 pounds. The mods were free and took about an hour
to do. Tools needed were metric wrenchs, large phillips screwdriver and I
used a Dremel to cut out the exhaust restricter. It looks like a little
funnel inside the pipe. You don't have to have the dremel but it made it
easier. go to www.motorcycle.com and click vino hop-up for info on how they
did theirs and a review. The instructions they give for the transmission are
more complex than what you actually need to do. Just remove the kickstarter,
remove the plastic cover, open the transmission, look under the belt at the
front and you will see a washer at the bottom of the pully. Carefully take
apart the pully and remove the washer, then put it all back together again.
Nothing to it. You don't have to drain the oil or the snap ring on the
kick-starter shaft like the article says. At least I didn't have to. It took
me an hour but if I had to do it again I think I could do it in 30 minutes.

huh? restrictor?

immediately after reading this, i removed my exhaust from the engine head...

there's nothing in there!

where is this restriction???? (we are talking vino here right?)
230lbs: the vino's max load (gas, driver, groceries) is 175 lbs

tell me 2 things:
- where is this restrictor exactly?
- teh tranny washer thing, doesn't the oil all leak out when you open it???

I think the restrictor is on the inlet of the muffler.
I believe the drive is a belt, therefore no oil in there.
Hopefully the poster will clarify, I don't actually have a Vino.

but is the pipe the same inner diameter the whole way thru? or is there
something restricting the flow of the hot powerful gasses? if you were hot
gas, would you be able to leave the motor quickly? become one with the
exhaust... embrace it. project yourself into and thru the exhaust passages!
the answer will come to you!

Yeah, it's a Vino! It's less than a month old. I plan to get a picture taken of
me riding a wheelie on it this weekend.

To find the restrictor remove the exhaust header and muffler. They are welded
together. Mine had a restrictor in the header right where it connected to the
engine. It looked like a little funnel that was welded in with 3 little welds.
The opening was pencil sized it should have been dime sized. I used a dremel
rotary tool to grind down the welds before I broke it out with a screw driver. I
didn't notice much increase in noise when I was finished but it only had 13
miles on it when I did it so I didn't really listen to it very much to begin
with.

If your header pipe looks like the correct diameter on the inside yours may have
had the restrictor removed before you bought it. After I did mine I took it to
the dealer to show them how much faster it was. They had 2 in stock and after
seeing mine they modified 1 of theirs before it was sold. I asked if the
customers knew that one person was getting the slow one and the other was
getting the fast one and they said that they didn't tell them. Your dealer could
have done the same so yours may not have a restricted header pipe.

The oil in the transmission isn't in the main part, There's a belt and a couple
of variable width pulleys in it so you don't have to worry about the oil leaking
out. If you take off the cover and look under the belt in the front you will see
a nickel/zinc colored washer in the middle of the pulley. If it's not there,
then put the cover back on.

I found this info at www.taffspeed.co.uk/technic/50ccauto.htm

This page will give you general info about making any 2 stroke 50 cc scooter
fast and if you scroll down to the bottom and click Yamaha/Minarelli Style
Motors it has more details about Yamaha specifically. Scroll down to the diagram
with belt and the pulleys. The washer that I removed was around the hub under
the belt. The washer is not shown in the image. Those guys will sell you stuff
to get your scooter up to 70. I don't think I have good enough brakes for that
much speed since after I bought mine I found I was indeed 60 pounds over the
weight limit. My friend (300 pounds) got it up to 35 on level ground on the
street in front of my house. It may have been able to go a little faster but the
street isn't very long.

then mine definitely has teh restrictor removed.

i took it for a first spin yesterday and am about to drive it again today.

taking off from a light, it's definitely quicker than a sanely driven car ;)

very much fun indeed.

keeping it at 1/3 throttle is a bitch though (break in)

i'll look for that washer thingy when i hit 500 km, as i'll be changing the
oil at the same time.
looks like my impact driver will come in handy to remove thr trans cover.

Well I removed my exhaust restriction today,It was tacked on inside the
pipe and it did look like a little funnel.I took it out and was very
impressed with the additional power.I was cramped for time as usual so I
didn't do the tranny yet but when I went to work I was flying.Anyway
john? from Canada The Vino they sell in the U.S. is maybe restricted
differently then those in Canada? Did you read the article from
www.motorcyclesonline.com in its entirety?
bye.........Willie..........01 blackass Vino yesterday 30mph today 35mph
tommorow 45mph if I can get about 50-55 mph I will be pleased.........

yeah, i pretty much read all those articles in their entirety.
i can't see no funnel stuff, is it on the engine or on the pipe?
i've had mine to 25mph so far, doesnt seem to wanna go much faster either,
but i don't push it too much, it's only got a dozen or so miles on it so far

the exhaust restrictin is a little round piece of metal kinda funnel
shaped,it is tack welded inside of the exhaust header which is the pipe
that is connected to engine.you have to remove 4 bolts all together take
pipe and muffler off completly but don't lose the brass crush-ring
gasket, look down the pipe notice the three spot welds holding a small
obstruction that looks like a little funnel? you got to knock it
out.....Willie.

C'mon, I know we all want to go a little faster, but maybe start with a
faster bike rather than trying to get a 50cc Vino on the freeway.
Actually I'm a little irked that you can tweek this little Yamaha 50 to
go almost as fast as my 150 2 stroke. That's unless y'all are just
greatly exaggerating.

I know you meant that as acceleration, not speed. 32 feet per second
squared, speed determined by the time...but I got what you meant..My
favorite is when someone tells me their motorcycle goes 120 mph (on a 250 0r
450) I just say maybe it will down a mineshaft with a tail wind :-p

I've read that if you use synthetic 2 cycle oil you won't have any buildup in
your exhaust and you won't have any more smoke in the exhaust. I bought a
gallon of it for $20 but haven't needed to add any to my scooter yet. In my
weedeater the exhaust no longer has any smoke.

Over 10,000 miles on my Zuma, about 6000 on the LeoVinci exhaust, not a
hint of carbonizing I keep hearing about, especially from listening to
UK riders (crappy gas or oil?). I use full synthetic because of the
tuned state of the engine. Smokes less than Yamalube (avoid that stuff,
it's crap) and smells nicer too.

i'm starting a new thread, calling it "50cc oiling", because while it's
interesting, it don't belong here, and people not interested in the vino
might miss it, and that'd be a shame...
