I have a 1987 Honda Spree and it will idle, but shuts down when throttle is
applied. I am guessing that I need a carb rebuild kit. I also need an air
filter (there isn't one in scooter). I am located in Gainesville, Florida.
Any help in finding these parts would be appreciated.

Also, what parts should I worry about replacing in carburetor. All gaskets?
float valve? throttle needle?

Any and all help is appreciated

go to www.hondamil.com

they will tell you what you need, best prices, ship to your door.
They usually have a carb rebuild kit with all the bits you need.

Just wondering - why do you think you need a carb rebuild? Did you get the
scoot in this condition, or did this problem just start happening? The rebuild
kit won't hurt anything, but why don't you just clean out the carb and see how
it runs. Also - very important - most scooters run very badly without the
complete stock air cleaner setup and stock air filter. If you are running the
scoot with no air filter at all, I can pretty much guarantee this is a big
problem. When you blib the throttle without the filter on, too much air is
getting in the carb and it gets leaned out.

I'm fairly certain that I need to rebuild. Fuel seems to be leaking from the
carb. I figured the air cleaner would help.
Story of scoot:
When I got the scoot, it had been sitting for about 6 mos. with gas in the
tank. It was running OK, even without an air filter (although I didn't know
the filter was missing at the time). I rode it for about 2 months with no
problems. One day I hit a hard bump and it would only idle. I thought that
since it would idle but not run when throttled, the carb might be gummed up
from sitting, so I sprayed some carb cleaner into the carb, and it ran OK.
Eventually, the shutting down happened several more times. I took apart the
carb, and cleaned it to the best of my ability. I put it all back together,
and it seemed to run like a charm. The next time I rode it, though, the same
thing happened. I have no idea if hitting the hard bump has any correlation
to the actual problem, but that is when the problem first arose. I'm still
not sure if I need to worry about replacing all parts in the carb. Also, I
didn't soak the carb for 24 hrs. as I have now been told to do by a friend.
Thanks
Craig

Air filter you can get for a couple dollars from the Honda website or from Amazon. There are carb rebuild kits at many scooter/moped websites and some stores will order it for you if you go in and tell them what you need. Only replace gaskets if there is wear, if you use an ignition starter fluid do NOT get this on the gasket that connects directly to the engine (not the side connecting to the air filter) as this will cause damage by wearing or it can cause it to expand and you will have to replace it. Within the carb the most important thing is to have everything aligned correctly. Be very careful with the '87 when messing around with the throttle valve, they are very touchy on this year and you can easily damage it. The smallest parts of dirt and carbon build up can causes defects, so generally a good cleaning is all that is needed. Be sure that the air valve is turned to the correct setting if you remove this (it is a screw on the side of the carb) I believe it is 1 and 3/8 turns back after being tightened, but best way to know if the count your turns when removing it.

Hope this helps.
