I am looking into getting a Vino to ride around town. Wondering if
there is any safe way of carrying a small (12 pounds) dog with me.

Anyone doing this? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Large top box with air holes?

Cook it first?

Long lead and a skateboard for the dog?

I have a friend who carries a small dog in a saddle bag (without lid) on
a motorcycle. The same technique should work, probably with a rear
trunk on a Vino as long as the dog wouldn't freak out and jump out while
the bike is moving.

Convert a pet carrier so it fits on a top box mount?

I do just that with my daschund. We use an item called the PetPocket
to hold him (basically a front-mounted carrier) and a pair of
"Doggles" for his eyes. If your dog is exposed to wind, his eyes will
water, so be sure to protect them.

I've uploaded some pictures of my hound to
foxleap.com/dog/doggles01.jpg (01 thru 05)

You can also see them through the Yahoo group "Maxi-Scooters"

Enjoy,

I've got just the thing for you. Okay, maybe not _just_the_thing_, but
it'll probably get you moving in the right direction.

See this page: http://members.tripod.com/sc_squared/bios/victoria.htm
(don't forget the underscore between sc and squared) Check out the photo.

The dog's name is Itchy. I believe he's an Italian Greyhound. Victoria
carries him in a little purpose-made pet harness. I think she mentioned
that she got it at PetSmart.

You could probably accomplish just about the same thing with a slightly
modified baby carrier.

They make harnesses that are meant to keep a dog anchored so he can't
jump out of a car. Any et store, or agway should be able to help. My
brother brought his beagle in an open jeep, and the dumb-ass dog took
a powder after a cat at about 20mph, tore his paws all to hell on the
pavement. After that my brother bought a harness, about like any
other collar-free dog harness, with a ring at the bottom meant to
clip to a snapped together lap belt with a very short lead. You could
do the same inside a top box without the lid, with a ring mounted in
the bottom of the box, but it would need to be arranged with a very
short lead so that poochie can't bail under some alarming
circumstance, such as collision avoidance. Bottom line, though it
sounds good, yer pooch would be in a world of hurt should you dump the
scoot, as he has no way to get himself free, even at the lowest speed.
Human passengers at least get free from the machine, which is often a
really good thing in the case of a wreck. I can just imagine poochie
hanging half out of the top box as the bike slides along and you
standing there watching helplessly, after dumping it in city traffic,
say avoiding a car.

The dog is the easy part.....it's keeping the bun, mustard, and relish under
control that's tough!

Well, I'm sure you've seen those new-fangled baby-papoose backpacks
that is all the rage with the yuppie set - just get one and carry your
dog on your back like that!

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions and cool links.

I think I will either go with a box attached to the back rack or I
will make some kind of modified kid carrier that I can wear. Probably
work on this next Spring.

Thanks again!

id been looking for a trunk for a while. givi was too pricey, and otherwise
i wasnt having any luck. so i went to my mom and pop motorcycle shop...
house of handlebars, in signal hill, ca. told them what i wanted. they
pulled a few catalogs of large companies they order from, and thumbed
throught the luggage section. i got the cheapest box they had... $60. big
enough for a full face, and with a lock. i dont think id put a dog in there
tho.

Are you crazy?! Why would you want to endanger a dog like that...to
look cool or cute? Same wrong-headedness as those idiots who put dogs
in the backs of pickups: all it takes is emergency braking or sudden
avoidance turn and the poor pooch is probably history. Keep the dog
at home...please!

People in Taiwan take their dogs with them all the time! I saw several
instances of small dogs riding on the front of scooters with their paws
hanging over the front and their ears flapping in the breeze.....they seemed
to enjoy it :)
