Question: (also asked Terry)

A friend mentioned that when working on bigger engines that every bolt
must be torqued equally to prevent problems on the cylinder head (like
in cars). Terry, nor anyone else, every mentioned this in regards to
the 70cc kit. I just made them tight and snug, but not too tight (the
bolts were fairly tight on the stock installation).

He said just to keep an eye on oil leakage or air problems, neither of
which have been a problem. I did tighten gradually in a 1-3-2-4 pattern
to do it balanced.

Is just "snug" good enough, or do I need a tiny (there isn't much room
up there!) torque wrench?

Kevin, re cylinder head toeque, this should be 7.2 ft/lbs, which is not a
lot. Equal to a "good snug fit" I would think. A tip: most wrenches are
made to a certain lenght so that you cannot apply too much pressure. So as
a rule of thumb, if you tighten down a nut/bolt until the wrench is at the
reasonable limit of your ability to tighten any more, that is about right.
It is usually very unwise to use a pipe to lenghten the wrench, and this
will either snap the head off the bolt/nut, or strip the tread.

DR 70cc installation manual calls for 1 - 1.2 Kgm.

You do need a torque wrench. It is quite important.

Terry said 8 lbs. and that as long I got it "snug" and evenly (balance)
and kept an eye out for oil leaks, I was fine. Guess these little bike
cylinders are less picky and/or more forgiving than bigger motors?
