There's a 1984 Honda Elite 125 for sale here that's in mint condition
(windshield intact), garaged, original owner w/title, recently
serviced w/new battery. He wants $975. I don't mind the price if
it's in the ballpark but it seems high...does that sound right?
What's the "going" price for these these days...I've seen a lot of
2000's hondas for around a grand.

Where do you live and what's the mileage? And how are the tires?
Recently serviced could save you several hundred dollars over getting
one that wasn't that you might need to have serviced.

Apparently everything is mint condition...5000 miles. Tires look new.

Well, it sounds fairly reasonable to me, especially if it's in perfect
shape. You might check KBB.com and your local Craigslist to see what
your local market is like, though.

If it's as nice as you say, it's a steal at that price. There are plenty
still running with over 50,000 miles. Not only does the reliabilty keep the
price up, the 125 and 150 Deluxe are sort of an 80s icon which adds a
collector value. Eventhough engines are identical in the standard 150 and
the '87 150, they have much lower values. That pop up headlight was seen in
plenty of commercials and even a few movies.
Only bad thing about the 125 is that the top speed is between 55 and 60 mph.
I don't think any states allow a 125 on the highway. In '85 Honda upped the
displacement to 150cc which made them freeway legal and added an extra 10
mph.
Plenty of parts are still available from Honda and there's a never ending
supply of used parts on ebay. The 125 is rare being a one year model but
most 150 parts are the same.

And if you don't like it you can always resell it on ebay in the spring and
pocket a few hundred.

Thanks. I ended up getting it for $875 and am picking it up on
Saturday. My commute is 3 miles through neighborhoods so 55-60 is
plenty fast enough. I'll post some photos once I get it.

any recommendations on a lightweight full face helmet? and some "50cc"
badges? ;-)

Congrats, I'm sure you'll like it.
Plenty of helmets to choose from, most important is to get one that fits
correctly and is comfortable. Most made today are light weight. At the
very least make sure it's DOT rated. I personally won't buy one unless it
has the Snell rating which always cost a bit more. It's a very debatable
subject.

As far as passing it off for 50cc...if you ever get into an accident or
pulled over by the wrong cop with an axe to grind, you can be in for a
REALLY bad day. It'll be no different than if you were driving an
unlicensed car with no insurance. If you don't have an MC endorsement on
your drivers license that can be another charge. Fortunately they're cheap
to plate and insure.

What color did you get? Gold or red?

No brainer...it's a steal at that price (even if it was used a bit more).

Nice find! I may look for a Helix at some point; can't beat twist-n-go
for running errands and hauling stuff.
